Creating the Bamboo Base Shapes
Step 1: Bodhi Tree Collections uses bamboo from wild bamboo forests in Southeast Asia. Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, much more than hard wood.
Step 2: Once the bamboo is collected, it is soaked in local ponds for four months to a full year. This method naturally fumigates the organic materials by pulling out the natural sweetness of the bamboo stalk, making insects naturally repelled.
Step 3: After the natural fumigation process is complete and the bamboo has fully dried, the Bamboo is cut into long, thin, even stalks by hand.
Step 4: The flexible bamboo stalks are spun into seamless forms, creating the shape of the design.
Step 5: Once the desired shape has been created, the shape is coated with a rice glue, smoothing out the design. The coated design is allowed to dry in the sunshine or by a fire in the winter months.
Step 6: After the piece has dried, multiple light coats of rice glue are applied to ensure rigidness and longevity. Each layer will dry in the sunlight and be polished by hand. The desired color will be added as the final layer. In our IndieGoGo design, we are featuring our newest Bodhi Tree Collections line with natural bamboo coloring paired with a crisp white lacquer color base.
Step 7: Before finishing touches are made, our local quality control inspects the pieces for flaws and imperfections, ensuring that you get the highest quality product.
The entire process is an ancient tradition that has been passed down for many generations. What’s so spectacular about it is that the environmental sustainability of this beautiful craft was one created out of necessity rather than choice.

About Bodhi Tree Collections
Bodhi Tree Collections started two years ago, after I visited Vietnam and fell in love with the bamboo and natural lacquer decorative items I discovered during my travels. I met some incredible friends there who turned me onto the process and shared their artwork with me. Ever since, I have been working to bring these handmade items made from organic, sustainable materials to the US. I’ve imported some initial designs and sold them in stores throughout the US both online and off.
In working through the process of designing, importing and selling, I have recognized what I can do to improve the business by creating a fun, configurable product that beautifies the bath in a chemical free, orgainic way; helps to save time and money with shapes that are easy to clean, while maintaining the eco-friendly aspect of the designs that first impressed me. After some meditation and research on the topic I decided to take my next steps with this IndieGoGo campaign. In order to allow my company to take its next steps, I'm giving you the chance to get your hands on these beauties before anyone else does, all while supporting an international network of artists involved and being a good environmental steward in the process.
With your pledge, I'll be able to source and transport my base shapes from Vietnam to my warehouse in the USA, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the women that make the bamboo items by hand. I'll also be able to manufacture my charms locally in California and begin marketing and selling the new designs.
Cost Specifics
Master Models: These are solid metal and clay models in the shape of my new designs. I have already created these for my first set of charms. When it’s time to design the next release of charms, I’ll work with local artist who should be reasonably compensated for their work.
Casting Molds: These are the molds created with the Master Models and used to pour the molten metal for mass production. We have already created one mold for the five initial charms, which should last up to 20 or 30 production runs. To make more charms than this, I will also need to create additional molds.
Metal and Materials: Each charm weighs less than half a pound. Your pledge funds will help support the expense of the recycled metal used, other materials in casting and the time of the casters. Then exact quantity will depend on the amount of pledges.
Production of Bamboo Base Shapes: Once the campaign is complete, your pledge will help to get my friends in Vietnam working on the base shapes. It takes them roughly three months to complete all the steps required, so assessing the quantity of the base shape and volume of each will be a first priority after the campaign ends. I’ve already worked with them to design the initial samples and now need to tell them how many of which shapes to make.
Third Party Inspection Company for Bamboo Shapes: In order to avoid inconsistencies in the design and high quality products, we will get another set of eyes to inspect and send a report before the items are shipped.
Importing the Bamboo Base Shapes: Once complete, the bamboo base shapes will need to be packed and shipped over from Vietnam to Southern California. It’s usually best to have them travel by sea.
Packaging: This is how the charms and base shapes will make their way safely to you from our warehouse. I’m working to narrow down a safe way of packing with minimum waste that does the gorgeous pieces justice. A smooth and efficient delivery process will require a Fulfillment Agency. In this way, your eco-friendly designs will arrive safe and sound, and on time.
Risks and Challenges
As with any manufactured products there are risks. Here are a few of the risks that I feel confidently able to overcome:
Loose agreements for timeline: When dealing with villagers in Vietnam, time is much more malleable than we think of it in western cities. Additionally, in Asia the Lunar New Year celebration (which is at the beginning of February this year) means work stops for at least a week if not a week and a half, so timeline could be stretched slightly to allow for the holiday.
Weather: Since the bamboo base shapes are usually cured in the sunshine, prolonged rain in Vietnam could delay completion.
Product Consistency: This is less a problem with the metal charms than it is with our bamboo base shapes. To assure that the products are created exactly as agreed, we’ll employ a 3rd party inspection agency to inspect a sample if the designs before delivery so we know we’ll get what we’re expecting.
Importing Bottlenecks and Schedules: The base shapes will be shipped by sea and are therefore subject to the schedules set by the ocean liners and transportation brokers. This is a risk at both ends, the port in Vietnam as well as the port in Los Angeles. Extenuating circumstances like worker strikes or bad weather can increase the time it takes for the items to arrive.
