Did you say, Bong of the Living Dead?

In its simplest form, this film is both a stoner movie and a zombie movie.  More than that, it's a character piece - a buddy movie.  But even deeper than that, it's a social allegory and commentary on the differences between two very specific cultures within our society.  The zombies are merely the external conflict that is highlighting the internal conflicts of our characters while trapped in their house amidst the apocalypse.  So, yes, it is a stoner film.  And yes, it is a zombie film.  But also so much more.

Check out our Gallery to see a teaser trailer for the film.

Who is Backward Slate Productions?

Backward Slate is a production company based in Columbus, Ohio that specializes in short films and music videos.  Formed in 2006, BSP explores filmmaking as not just an art or a hobby but as a way of life.  Filmmaking is a collaborative art and should be a fun experience, more like a vacation than a day at the office.  For a look at some of our previous work, please go to our Gallery to check out our award-winning short film "Carpool," voted Audience Favorite in the 2011 48 Hour Film Project in Columbus, Ohio and winner of Best U.S. Short at the 2012 Nevermore Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina.

This film is Backward Slate’s biggest undertaking to date. Aside from the normal production challenges that any team shooting a movie encounters, there are also some hurdles specific to our project that we’ll need to clear.

The first is telling a story in a longer format than we’re used to. With a feature film, everything is bigger. Bigger script, bigger cast and crew, bigger budget. Compared to our past projects, we’ll have a longer shoot schedule, we’ll encounter more budgetary needs, and we’ll have more actors and crew members to coordinate (many of whom will be taking time out from their day jobs and families and working for us for little to no pay). Our past experiences have prepared us for many of these challenges, but we need your help in reaching this bigger budget to better equip us to overcome these challenges. Choose to back our project, and your money will be used to help us afford better equipment, more FX materials, and to help pay some people for their time. All these things will make Bong of the Living Dead a better product and help eliminate the risk of not being able to complete. The more money we can raise, the less of a challenge this will become.

The second challenge specific to our film is overcoming the stigma of a 'stoner' movie. But, we've spent ten years writing the script, developing the story, and putting life into our characters in an attempt to overcome what might on the surface seem to be a movie just about zombies and pot. We have complete confidence that we can overcome the stigma associated with stoner films and present a heartfelt story about lifelong friends...killing zombies. Your backing of Bong of the Living Dead will not only help us financially with the logistics of telling the story, but will also give moral support to our belief that not everything associated with genre films or marijuana is taboo.

With your help, we can face the risks of challenges of completing this feature with the tools needed to succeed and the confidence needed to finish.

When can I see the completed film?

We're shooting in May 2013 and expect to have all the film out on DVD and in your players by next year.

Thanks for your time and support.  Please spread the word about our campaign and help us bring this film to a DVD player near you.
