Once Upon a Time...
...There lived a creative organization called Boston
Rock Opera. It provided the fair city of Boston with magical performances inspired by musicians from many backgrounds. They worked together to ensure that everyone involved, performer and audience member
alike, would behold the grandeur of the Boston music scene - while also having a rocking good time, of course. Then, after 10 years of shows, BRO was
cast under a dissolution spell and has been sleeping ever since.
In recent days, the spell was lifted and the
sleeping people of Boston Rock Opera awakened in haze of happy memories. However, they soon realized that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Believing in the power of music to inform and transform, BRO is refreshed and more ready than ever to unite the forces of Boston musicians to generate enchanting new productions for audiences and performers alike.
It was time to rock again! So, the BRO joined forces with G-Rock
Music's Kameelah Benjamin-Fuller to begin telling a new story with an old one, to return to the stage with the revolutionary 1960s rock musical HAIR.
Why HAIR? HAIR is the story the generation on the front lines
of the social overhaul of 1960s America; the Vietnam cannon fodder, the out-of-work kids, whose histories reverberate today. Media
overload, fear of technology, disgust with authority, sexual curiosity and drug use drove the alternative reality they created to keep the spectre of the draft and death away.
The BRO
passionately believes this musical will remind us that history forgotten repeats itself as politics, race, class and gender continue to stratify our society.
Be a part
of this real life fairy tale! Boston Rock Opera has started this campaign to
allow us the space to create a vision that is singular and sends a
message to the world that we are all together on this journey.
What We Need
In our effort to support all things local, we have chosen to work with locavore restaurant Once/Cuisine En Locale as our performance venue. This is an intimate hall (275 seats) that will allow everyone to have the best seat in the house. However, this decision comes at a cost. Tickets sales, even if all the shows sell out, will not cover the full costs of presenting HAIR. Boston Rock Opera had years of experience staging theatrical rock, every dime raised in this campaign is already allocated to this production. The licensing for HAIR alone costs more than $3,000 and we have a lengthy budget of any typical musical production including lighting, sound, costumes, sets, rehearsal space and publicity.
Furthermore, we are committed to allowing those who make this show happen - the cast, musicians and crew - to be paid for the amazing performance and service they provide! When you help us, you help create a sustainable community through the arts. In fact, you aren't just helping, you become a part of that community!
What You Get
By donating to this campaign, you are showing the rest of the world the strength of Boston, its vibrant music scene and most importantly, its people.
But wait there's more! Pledging will allow you the chance to be involved at multiple levels. Everything helps and we want to show our appreciation for believing in our story. Be a part of HAIR as little or as much as you can (the more people in the tribe, the better). Check out our Perks! We've got BRO collectables, special events, ticket packages and more to share with you.
The Impact
The people of BRO are reuniting out of mutual love and passion for music and its impact and commentary on the human experience. Boston Rock Opera has a long history of successfully and creatively producing ground-breaking modern musicals and rock operas. Past shows included Jesus Christ Superstar, Ray Davies' Preservation, The Point!, SF Sorrow, The Rocky Horror Show and original works written and produced by Boston artists. With your help, we'll entertain you once again.
