Bottleneck is a take on a classic tale of two sisters.

Cassy Keller is stern, determined, and tediously unhappy. Her older sister Sarah is grounded and is busy taking care of her teenage daughter and Cassy. On the anniversary of their mother's death, the two sisters hit the town for a night out. What was supposed to be a normal night at the local dive takes an unexpected turn as memories from their pasts emerge.

Bottleneck
is the first short film produced by Reel Women, a newly formed student organization at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Reel Women is a safe space for all genders to begin a dialogue about the inequalities within the film industry. We seek to educate, empower and support marginalized student filmmakers before entering the film industry so they have the tools and the confidence to thrive.

Here's where you come in.

We're asking for $2,000 to make Bottleneck a reality.

  • The majority of funding is going towards our props department--specifically a vintage rustic red Ford pick up truck, which is vital to a key scene in the story. Funding will also be going towards ensuring the look and feel of the film is in line with our director's vision, providing for our very talented cast, and keeping our hardworking crew well-fed and ready to go. We also intend to submit to festivals, and will require money for submission fees and other post-production costs. And of course, a little extra, because you never know.
  • As student filmmakers, we're aware that making a film is a lot of hard work, and that film sets come with trials and tribulations, but as students we've also learned how to roll with the punches and take on any challenges as they come. We work hard in the face of adversity, and if we don't meet our goal, we'll keep working twice as hard in order to achieve our goals.
  • Here's how our budget breaks down:

The Impact

Reel Women's mission is to empower and support marginalized student filmmakers, and the crew lineup of our first production reflects this. Our director, producers, production designer, assistant directors, assistant producer, ACs, and grips are all women, making up a majority female crew. As determined as we are to make a great short film, we also want our set to be a learning environment for these crew members to learn about key positions that will help them going forward in the film industry. Your contributions will go directly to supporting Reel Women and both its mission and members.

Meet the Bottleneck Crew

Director: Susan Holder

Susan Holder will be making her student short directing debut with Bottleneck, and she is very excited to share her vision with the world. Finishing up her Junior year at UWM, Susan’s passions lie in art direction and cinematography, but she plans to continue to direct after graduation with the plan of making her own feature-length films. When she is not making movies or thinking about making movies, Susan enjoys long walks along Lake Michigan and rewatching Mad Max: Fury Road.

Director of Photography: Sean McDowell

Sean McDowell is currently in his third year studying filmmaking with an emphasis on cinematography at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee’s esteemed Peck School of the Arts. Ultimately, what gets Sean up in the morning is the urge to create stimulating imagery and collaborating with other passionate artists and filmmakers. For Sean, filmmaking is about connecting with an audience and leaving a lasting impression on their lives - and that’s why he's diving headfirst into this perilous and wonderful world of movie-making magic.

Production Designer: Diana Nunez

Diana Nunez is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, studying film. She loves all aspects of filmmaking, from producing to setting up lights, but production design what she’s passionate about. Creating new worlds and characters has always been a dream of hers and filmmaking helped her realize this. She has been able to create worlds and characters from the neon 80s to realistic fantasies. Diana hopes to learn in this production how to create real life sets while still having excellent and noticeable production design.

The Producers: Haley Kreofsky, Breianna Harvey, Shannon McInnis, Dana Shihadah, and Sydney Zahradka.

Haley, Breianna, Shannon, Dana, and Sydney are the producers and officers of Reel Women. They are a mix of Film and Film Studies majors, studying everything from cinematography to producing to business. Since forming Reel Women last October, they have dedicated themselves to creating a dialogue on gender inequality in the film industry and supporting Milwaukee's student filmmakers. While Bottleneck is their first production under Reel Women, they have made and produced a number of short films during their time at UWM.
