How are the keycaps manufactured?
The keycaps are injection moulded in industrial production; the extremely high costs of the tool are also “to blame” for the finance amount of this campaign.
What shape will the keycaps be?
The shape of the keycaps will be as close to the classic concave shape as possible, each keyboard row will have its own shape with the correct angles and axes. Differences compared to the original keyboard will be minimal, if any. Under no circumstances will we produce the flat keyboard the C64X had.
What material will the keycaps be made from and will this material yellow?
The keycaps are made from PC + ASA granulate. This very high quality plastic granulate is used in many fields, ranging from the medical field or the aircraft industry, all the way to the automotive industry. This granulate contains no additives so it is certain to prevent discolouration or yellowing.
How are the keys imprinted?
The keys are imprinted with the pad printing process, just as virtually all keyboards currently being manufactured. It provides a crisp and clear print image which stays clean for years, even with daily use.
Which keyboard layout is used?
Just as Commodore (z. B. C64G) at the time, we decided on complete printing from the top for financial reasons, the layout corresponds with the US International layout. Unfortunately, at this volume, printing the classic symbols on the front is unaffordable.
How can I choose the keytop colour?
Once the campaign has successfully ended, we will send you a link to our processing system shortly before production starts. Here you can then choose colours, order additional features, change the delivery address, or pay the shipping charges (if you forgot).
Will you have transparent keycaps?
Yes, we offer translucent (like the 90ies iMac G3) keycaps in Snow, Blue and Red.
What about the “Commodore” key?
The name “Commodore” and the logo are still registered and using them without the trademark owner’s permission is prohibited. We’ve tried to contact the trademark owner several times, but to no avail. We plan (as shown in the pictures) to simply imprint the respective key with “C” or “C=”.
Will you also have other keyboard layouts?
Different layouts require different print templates. These add significant costs, and considering the volume it’s unfortunately not feasible.
Why aren’t there more colours to choose from at the moment?
Switching colours in production also involves costs. Costs for stopping production, cleaning the machine, and the production waste. We purposely did not include these added costs in the price; we were more focused on an inexpensive product than thousands of colours.
Why is shipping 10.- Euro more, not free of charge?
Because there is no such thing as free shipping. With free shipping, sellers simply “hide” the shipping costs in the retail price. We could have done the same, free shipping – but then every set would have been 29.- Euro. But this would have been unfair to those buying several sets or perks, since they would have paid multiple shipping charges. That’s why we offer the “Shipping” perk, which you only need to apply once. No matter how many sets you’re buying – saving you cash!
