BREWLAND is an in-depth look at craft beer in the United
States as told by the most noted names in the industry. By definition, craft
beer is “small, traditional, and independent,” however, in reality it is far
more complex. We seek to answer this question and more as we explore the
struggles people face, trace the history back to its arrival with the pilgrims, look at the astonishing growth of the industry and try to find out where it all might go.

Last year, BREWLAND started out as a small passion project about
craft breweries in Vermont. We conducted interviews with The Alchemist, Hill
Farmstead, Vermont Pub and Brewery and many other restaurants, businesses and
farmers. As we learned from them and researched deeper we realized Vermont was
only a small part of a much larger story. One that has yet to be told. Sure,
there are many great documentaries on the history of beer, a specific rivalry,
a region or a profile but no one had really looked at the big picture.
So we expanded to Boston with Harpoon, Jack’s Abby, Mayflower, Samuel
Adams then to New York with Evil Twin. We interviewed craft beer historians Tom
Acitelli and Lauren Clark.
Now, we are planning our last set of interviews. Our goal is to interview many more people all through out the industry including more in New York and Boston like Beer Advocate, Brooklyn Brewery, Clown Shoes, Dogfish Head, High Horse, Spencer, Trillium, Victory. In Colorado we want Avery, Breckenridge, the Brewer’s Association, CraftBeer.com, Great Divide and Oskar Blues. In California we want Anchor Brewing, Firestone Walker, Lost Abbey, Russian River, Sierra Nevada, Stone and Untappd.

We are spending every last dime we have; emptying out our bank accounts, maxing out our credit cards and even taking second jobs to make this passion project a reality. Our crew has graciously donated their time and equipment providers have been very generous to us with great deals on equipment. This has allowed us to come this far but we need your support to finish the film. The money from this campaign will ensure that the finished project is worthy of the story and the people who have been apart of this film.

We need to raise $65,000 to finish the film right. The funding
from this campaign will help purchase hard drives, pay legal fees, and cover the post-production costs of editing, audio mix and mastering, color grading
and so much more.
If we hit $75,000 we will create some really cool animation
sequences for the film to help explain some of the more complex concepts and to
bring more life to the historical segments. We can also hire a composer to
create the soundtrack this story deserves.
If we pass $85,000 we can expand our reach and film other important people and locations across the country.
And, we hope above all, we can compensate our crew a little. They have been absolutely amazing to us and deserve at least a little something for all the time, effort and talent they have donated to us and this project.
The production team is in it for the long haul. Our goal is to complete the film, no matter what. The money will be going strictly towards the completion of the project and not to the producers or director of the film.
![]()
Our biggest hurdle is getting enough money to make
BREWLAND the film it deserves to be. The speed of production on this
project has been careful and meticulous or...slow. We have spaced out our
shooting schedule and made frequent changes to interview dates to suit the
needs of our interviewees, crew and wallets. This has allowed us to get the
best quality interviews but has pushed the completion of the project back
further and further.
Another risk is that without the funding, we cannot afford lawyers that could prevent us from releasing the film. We
need the money to help secure a lawyer to aide with this process.
If we do not reach our funding goal, it is going to severely
delay the completion of the film and we won’t be able to hire the
post-production experts we need to take the film to the next level.

We are a small group of independent filmmakers from Boston.
We have spent many years producing our own music videos, short films and
commercials. We have won several awards for various projects and are now ready
to make the jump to our first feature-length project. BREWLAND is the perfect
story and opportunity.
Director Mike Sills works on commercials,
P.S.A.s and short films while overseeing the development and
experiences of many filmmakers and storytellers that come through the
national, award-winning media center NewTV. You can follow Mike on twitter and Untappd.
Producer Matthew Parola
studied film at Emerson College and co-founded Rough Water Films. He
has produced several award winning short films and music videos. You can follow Matt on twitter and Untappd.
Writer Chris Crossen has published several stories and has
a masters in teaching English, which he practices daily as a high
school teacher. You can follow Chris's musings on twitter.
Director of Photography, Gabe Munitz-Alessio has shot and directed many of his own
award-winning short films, music videos and commercials. Some of his
work can be seen at Aleph & Grisbi. You can follow Gabe on twitter and Instagram.
Award-winning editor Don Packer of EngineRoomEdit
will oversee the post-production process and editing of the film. Don’s
experience on films such as MISSING IN AMERICA, WILLING AND ABLE and
LET THERE BE LIGHT has been a huge benefit.
Most importantly, we have an incredibly talented crew that
has donated their time and talent to us every step along our journey. We would
not be where we are without their help.

We are not doing this for the money. BREWLAND is an
important project to us all.
We have discovered a fascinating story that is worth telling
and maybe, if we are lucky, we can get more people interested in the quality of
their beer. This project also helps us take the step into making more feature
films. Your contributions will help us achieve these dreams.
Please spread the word about this project! Like us on
Facebook, follow us on Twitter and Instagram and check out our website www.brewlandfilm.com.
We invite you to send us your feedback, questions or just
chat about beer!
Cheers!
