The Deal
We are the 2014-2015 Co-Chairs of Northwestern's Freshman Urban Program (FUP). FUP is a six-day pre-orientation program that introduces over 80 incoming Northwestern students to the diverse neighborhoods of Chicago where they learn about social justice issues, navigate the city, meet new friends, and open their minds to new perspectives.
One of the program's highlights is what we call "Arts Night." We bring together performers from both Northwestern and Chicago for a night of creativity, social awareness, and entertainment. Now we've decided that it would make for an even cooler experience if Arts Night was open to the entire student body.
Over the years, we've developed a great relationship with Young Chicago Authors (YCA), the non-profit that sponsors the largest spoken word competition in the world: Louder Than A Bomb. Founded in Chicago in 2001, the event attracts 1000 participants from 120
schools in over 100 different Chicagoland zip codes and 10,000 plus
audience members. YCA will contribute their performance expertise if we can raise the funds to do so; Kevin Coval will emcee the event and bring with him a diverse group of Chicago artists including bands, graffiti artists, comedy troupes, slam poets, and more.
We believe that Northwestern, despite its locality, lacks a large-scale event that showcases the immense talent and passion located just a few miles south of its campus. We're hoping to change that.
What We Need & What You Get
- We need $3,000 to cover all booking costs and entry for the event
- Your donation will make the event free and accessible to all students at NU
- If we don't reach our goal, :(, the funds will be used for a smaller scale Arts Night.
The Impact
- Expose Northwestern students to a small part of the immense Chicago art scene
- Illuminate the crossroads of art, social justice, politics and community building
- Start conversations!
