Short Summary
My name is Tony Bisceglia and I'm the Vice Principal of an urban Catholic high school in Toronto, Ontario. I had a moving conversation with a parent today that left me puzzled and motivated to do something. Today a mother confided in me that her son could not come to school as winter approached because she did not have money for his bus tickets. Her son had been walking back and forth to school up to now. When I probed a little more this troubled mother explained to me that her husband passed away last year and her brother who was the other bread winner in the family recently had a stroke and that she was currently unemployed. Not only did it take courage for this mom to confide these details about her private life but it took courage to ask for help as she mentioned that she tried her very best but that now she needed help and did not know where to turn. She pleaded with me for help and without totally being certain of how or where I would get these tickets I gave her my word that I would help! When she left my office I had a conversation with Lora Stellato one of the school Youth Workers who informed me that we had several kids on a bus ticket waiting list. I was taken aback but committed to do something to help these kids.
What We Need & What You Get
- My goal is to get this fundraiser to be a springboard for an ongoing fundraiser to make sure all the kids in my high school who can't afford bus tickets get them no questions asked!
- People who donate $100 or more will have their names added to a plaques which will be displayed in the school foyer.
- All the funds raised will go towards buying kids bus tickets.
The Impact
- Help at risk kids get bus tickets.
- All we want is for kids to get bus tickets so they can come to school everyday.
Risks & Challenges
- At risk kids need more than just bus tickets but this is step one.
- We know that for most people $5 a day isn't much but for an at risk youth roughly $5 a day buys him/her a return bus ticket to school.
Other Ways You Can Help
Some people just can't contribute, but that doesn't mean they can't help:
- If you know anyone that can donate bus tickets instead of money we would love to connect with you!
- Please share this message with everyone you know on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.
And that's all there is to it.
