Caia constantly takes light intensity readings using her sensor array, or ‘pointer’. Once you aim the pointer where you want to redirect sunshine, Caia's proprietary algorithm uses the light intensity values to position her motorized mirror at the correct angle to illuminate your chosen destination. As the light source (aka the sun) moves through the sky, Caia makes micro adjustments to the mirror position to maintain the perfect angle of reflection that keeps the natural light flowing to the same place all day. And the best part…the sunlight she reflects also powers her. No external energy source required!

Last but not least, she was designed with a foldable design that allows for easy, inexpensive shipping. And who doesn't like to pay less for shipping?

What about the Universal Mounting System? This part of the design is an add-on but feels like a natural extension of the core Caia design. Safety was our first and foremost focus while developing the design and our Mechanical Engineers spent months crafting out the best and safest mechanical solution. Through a combination of clever mechanics and robust materials, we think we did it.

Caia has come a long way, from our earliest proof-of-concept (that was bright red!), to our 1.0 working prototype and now to our beautiful 2.0 Caia re-design. The truth is that when manufacturing a new and innovative product, there are many challenges and some risks going into mass production, which may impact anything from production timing and cost, to final design.

The Solenica team is currently at the Design For Manufacturing (DFM) stage with Caia 2.0. After collecting feedback post-campaign from hundreds of backers on our original Caia 1.0 design, we worked heads down for three straight months to re-design Caia so that she would fulfill our customers' needs. We kept her original functionality perfectly intact - better, in fact, because she is now much more accurate in her pointing - while addressing some of the concerns on weathering, range of motion, and shipping that our backers had shared with us.

Now, part of the DFM stage on Caia 2.0 is improving every piece, down to her last gear, to make her perform best. Additionally, we will need to develop custom molds and tooling for the pieces that are unique to Caia and cannot be commoditized. With a custom mold, it can cost the same to make one hundred Caia's as it would several thousand!

What is Caia 2.0?
After our original Indiegogo campaign in Fall 2016 we got as much input from our backers as we could. We realized the original Caia design needed to be more flexible, so our amazing engineering team put all of their time and effort into developing a design that would truly reflect the needs of our customers. Introducing Caia 2.0! Our new and improved Caia design boasts a wider range of angles to redirect sunlight, metal instead of plastic housings for better outdoor durability, no external sphere, a reflective mirror made of safety glass, a more accurate sensor for pointing Caia, a foldable design that lowers shipping costs, and an even more beautiful look and feel (at least, in our opinion).

How durable is Caia?
Caia has strong metal housings to protect her delicate robotic systems and sensors. She is weather resistant and can handle a reasonable amount of rain and snow during the winter months. Her reflective mirror is also made of safety glass, so even if it does get broken it will stay in place and continue to reflect sunlight (though in a slightly more ‘disco ball’ manner) until you have time to replace it.
 

How much sunlight does Caia need to work?
Caia works best with direct sunlight however, she will redirect any available light so even diffuse light or cloudy skies can provide some illumination to a dark room.
 

How far can Caia reflect light?
In tests, Caia has illuminated areas up to over 100 feet away (30 meters). It’s entirely possible to go further, but Caia’s reflected light diffuses the further she has to go.
 

How many hours of light can expect from Caia?
8-16 hours a day depending on the available sunlight hours, time of the year and local geography.
 

Will Caia provide heat or just light?
Caia uses a flat mirror so the light reflected is not concentrated like a magnifying glass. The light Caia sends would be equivalent to the light that shines in through your window so your home will feel natural warmth but she can’t fry ants or start fires.
 

How is shipping and tax handled?
We are shipping to backers all over the world so taxes or duties vary from country to country. All of the shipping fees may be assessed during and after the campaign. We will follow up with our backers before shipping to confirm mailing address as well as shipping costs. Please note that the backer is responsible for all local taxes including but not limited to sales tax, VAT, GST, and import duties, as apply to them in their respective countries. We will do our best to reduce those fees to keep your costs down.
 

What kind of warranty do you offer on Caia?
Caia comes with a 1 year warranty that covers software, mechanical and component failures. Should you encounter any of the above problems just contact our customer support and we are happy to do everything to address the problem, even sending you a brand new Caia. Unfortunately, however, we cannot cover issues related to normal wear and tear or accidental damage.
 

When will accessories be available for Caia?
You can purchase a number of accessories on the Caia Store when it launches. This includes functional accessories as well as fun cosmetic items that allow you to customize the appearance of your Caia.
