Introduction
My name is
Darrell Langolf Jr writer and director of the World War 1 short film Cease
Fire. I currently attend the Art Institute of California – Hollywood studying
film and video production. This is going to be my graduating thesis film and it’s
been a project that I’ve been dreaming to make since I started school
three years ago. Now, I have the chance to finally tell this amazing true story,
but first, I need your help to make my unique vision come to life.
The Inspiration
Cease Fire is
based on the incredible true story of my Great Great Grandfather Glen Johnson, who served as Artillery Commander from 1917 – 1918. Through out that miserable
year, he saw the true monstrosities of war. He survived two mustard gas attacks,
was under constant mortar shelling and even seen his entire company obliterated
in front of his eyes. Out of all those stories, one stood out the most and it’s
something that changed my Great Great Grandfathers life forever.
The Story
A temporary
cease-fire has been issued causing both the Germans and American troops to work
together or starve. James Winston (who portrays my Great Great Grandfather) ,
is a seasoned veteran, that finds a fellow comrade injured on the outskirts of
no mans land. In order to save his fellow soldiers life, James must seek out
help with the most unlikely individual, a stern German soldier named Hans
Voldegar.
What We Need & What You Get
We need at least 5,000 dollars to get this film rolling.
- We've managed to get The Great Historical War Society behind us to let my crew use their amazing trench line, giving this film high quality production design. The cost to rent the land is roughly $400 a day. We will to be shooting for 4 days making it a grand total of $1,600 for just the land rental.
- Wardrobe is a must and we've managed to track down the best costuming company around named History For Hire. We got high quality World War 1 American and German uniforms for about $190 each. We need 1 German and 4 American uniforms making it a total of $950.
- Next is food. We literally got to feed an army! We need about $200 dollars a day to feed the actors, extras and crew. With a 4 day shoot, that comes out to $800 dollars.
- Lastly, are the extras. We've managed to get 20 members from The Great Historical War Society to come on bored and make this world a bit more believable. Luckily for us, they all come with their own historically accurate uniforms and gear! For all 20 members, we are looking at roughly $500 for the entire 4 day shoot.
- The rest of the money will go toward hotel rooms, transportation rentals, post production work and Blu-ray manufacturing.
The Impact
World War II
movies have had their spot light and now its time to turn to a different era. From
2014- 2018 is the 100th anniversary of World War 1 and now is the
best time to make these kinds of films.
Like Steven
Spielberg and Tom Hanks did with Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, I
want to capture the realism of war. To encompass the true brutality of it, but
still find that piece of humanity, like my Great Great Grandfather did.
With your help,
I want to help spread the word of World War 1, educate younger generations and
most of all, start the next batch of World War 1 films.
These stories
deserve to be told. These men are the true super heroes of our time and should
not be forgotten.
