This is a $41,977 Rotary Peru Water Global Grant, which will help to supply clean drinking water in the community of Chaquira. We need an additional $5,000, so we are asking for your support.
What is unique about a Rotary Grant is that every tax deductible dollar donated has the opportunity to grow to $3.50 because of the Rotary Matching Program.
We are very fortunate to have as our Partner a fantastic NGO, Water Missions International.
What's The Plan?
Community Managed Safe Water Project
Water
Missions Peru uses a community-managed Safe Water Project Model to facilitate
transformational change in Chaquira, Peru, while attacking relational strongholds
of the poverty cycle. This transformational change occurs through sustainable
safe water, sanitation and hygiene education practices. The projects longevity
is supported by a financial plan that accounts for ongoing operational and
equipment replacement costs. The foundation for all of these components is a
stable management structure – the safe water committee (SWC).

1. Community
Mobilization:
·
This community-led meeting is the formal
introduction of Rotary and Water Missions Peru to the entire community. The
project objectives and the expectations of each party are discussed and documented
in formal memorandum of understanding (MOU).
2.
Safe Water Committee Training:
·
Our Safe Water Committee training is broken into
different sessions. The trainings concentrate on roles and responsibilities,
the formation of a constitution to establish the governing as well as the financial
sustainability aspects of the ongoing operation, money handling and
accountability.
3. Water,
Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion:
·
WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) awareness
training is conducted for all local leaders to help engage community
support for the project. Volunteer WASH promoters then conduct (4) promotion
cycles in the community:
i.
Cycle 1: Water Usage & Contamination
ii.
Cycle 2: Water Treatment & Storage
iii.
Cycle 3: Hygiene Practices
iv.
Cycle 4: Sanitation
Community Provided Sweat Equity:
Community
equity is required for every project. Only after the
community’s investment is confirmed will Water Missions Peru bring water treatment
equipment to the
community for installation. There are opportunities in every project
for the community to invest. Examples of community equity include supplying
materials for construction, financial investment, and the provision of
skilled and unskilled labor support during construction activities.

Installation of Water Treatment Equipment:
Water
Missions Peru brings in water treatment equipment specifically selected or
designed for the community. Once installed, Water Missions Peru conducts a detailed
operator training session. After this process the water system is commissioned
and safe water flows into the community.

Post Commissioning Follow-Up & Support:
Work
in the community does not end once a project is commissioned. Water Missions
Peru provides a minimum of one year of follow-up and support. During that
period, Water Missions Peru monitors the technical operation and verifies water
quality, along with monitoring the reliability and work of the SWC. A typical
project’s implementation period can last three to eighteen months. This is a safe
water project, meaning we meet World Health Organization standards for safe water
that is free of all microbiological contaminants. We won’t settle for simply
‘improved’water,
which may still contain harmful contaminates.
