Short Summary
Social
responsibility does not exempt from the obligation of individual
responsibility. Let’s create art together, with the city’s most progressive
company, in the city’s most open-minded theatre.
011
Production Group and Atrium Film-Theatre would like to collaborate on the
premiere of Patrick Marber’s Closer,
to be directed by the young Hungarian artist, Márk Radnai (26). The production
will be the continuation of our two-year-old collaboration. 011 collects
young, creative actors, artists, filmmakers, and designers, whom the management
of Atrium Film-Theatre thinks important to support. The English playwright’s
play premiered in 1997 in London; making Marber and his work immediately
world-renowned. Since then, the play had been on the program of several
Hungarian theatres.
Responsible
for the program production in Atrium Film-Theatre is the English Language
Theatre Charitable Foundation, which tends to its philanthropic cultural
activity since 1991. With its programs and genre-diversity, the cultural center
in Buda functions as a professional and local meeting point and host theatre. The
program is made up by contemporary Hungarian and international theatre, dance,
classical music, film, and fine art. For Atrium Film-Theatre, it is of utmost
importance to assist contemporary young directors in staging their new
projects. For the staging of this production – besides own and sponsorship
resources – 011 Production Group and Atrium Film-Theatre would like to set up an Indiegogo project for the first time in their joint history to acquire the
necessary funds.
With
supporting our project, you contribute to…
- a young
group working with new artistic methods and representing a fresh trend to
prepare their next premiere
- helping young
artists to produce the funds necessary for their work with an independent
campaign
- furthermore,
you get involved with the creation of a theatre performance
Premiere: 11th May, 2015. Budapest, Atrium Film-Theatre

Synopsis of the play
Patrick
Marber’s play is about love, the desire to own each other, and revenge, and
shows it through the story of four people. It is the love rectangle of two men and two women, where fundamentally
lonesome and interdependent people look for happiness and fulfillment in each
other, trying to redeem their own lives through one another.
In London a
taxi accidentally hits a girl, who introduces herself to the passenger of the
taxi as Alice when he is taking her to the hospital. Dan, who wants to be a
journalist and works for a newspaper’s obituary column, is immediately
mesmerized by the girl’s straightforwardness and strong sexual aura. Alice has
just arrived at home from New York where she was working as a stripper. Dan
writes a novel based on the girl’s story, and he does a photoshoot for
publicity where he meets the older and less vulnerable Anna. Dan is unable to
get Anna out of his head, so he starts writing in the photographer’s name on a
sex-chat page to Larry, the doctor, who is dumbstruck by the dirty-mouthed
erotica that Dan beleaguers him with. Dan goes even further: he arranges a date
with the doctor in Anna’s name to an aquarium he knows is Anna’s favorite
place…
The plot
takes place in London where the photographer, the stripper, the writer, and the
doctor fatalistically meet. They keep cheating on each other, and they are
cheated on, too. Love is vital to them, but only if they cannot get it. If it
is at hand, it’s not exciting anymore.

About
011 Production Group
Every
theatre production has to create a unique world, system in which the spectator
can recognise the events important for him through a series of partial truths;
he can put the pieces together like in a puzzle. A good theatre is like the
rabbit’s hole for us, where space and time changes every minute, where the
actor turns into something different, he is a machine, a plant, an animal and
human, statue and animation. Where the memories of our subconscious are
connected to the main storyline with a thousand threads, where the numerous
manifestations of the world around us can be animated within moments. Where in
a concentrated moment I can feel the pouring rain, last year’s love, the
fantasy comics or my latest family meal. Where the scenes don’t follow each
other in a linear way, but every small unit can stand on its own as an
individual vision, social message or even just an impression, but if I want, I
can add to the plot by simply creating a story and going on writing my own story.
The question ‘what is this scene or sentence doing here?’ cannot come up in
theatre. It has to create a system in which these specks of dust roll by
themselves and I can either identify myself with them or they disturb me. If
the theatre doesn’t carry this kind of freedom, this kind of interpretation
network, then it becomes predictable and transparent.

Since the founding of 011 Production Group
they have created productions in a wide variety of genres. What connect them
are the modern, non-conventional film-like narratives and visuals, furthermore,
the experimentation with technologies not fundamentally connected to theatre. There
is no company behind the group, though mostly they work with the same group of
young actors in their productions. The members of the creative team are: Márk
Radnai, director; Renátó Cseh, designer; and Ambrus Ivanyos, dramaturge. The
performances aren’t usually created from already existing plays, but are
written by the creative team, using actors’ improvisations, situation
practices, and outside sources to create the script. The younger generation
follows the production group’s work closely, as well. Another thing that makes
011 Production Group exceptional is that they create unique promotion campaigns
for each of their performances. They have organised the first 011 Festival
between 7-11 June, 2014, in Budapest.

You can read
some press releases about 011 Production Group’s previous works. You all know
these stories and dramas, but the interpretation, the techniques, mixing the
different art genres, and such a visual quality on stage is very unique.
3D MAPPING,
NEW INTERPRETATION: MEANWHILE IN KANSAS
“The world
of The Wizard of Oz was never exactly
close to me. Márk Radnai and the production directed by him and, of course, the
techniques used, however, offered an interpretation of the story through which
an interpretation yet unknown was added to the stumbling along of Dorothy and
her friends.”

THE PILLOWMAN
“Director
Márk Radnai has staged something that is rarely seen in Hungarian theatres.
Martin McDonagh’s Pillowman namely
mixes the genres of a thriller, a horror or a revenge play, a whodunit, a black
comedy, and a political play.”

About
Atrium Film-Theatre
Atrium Film-Theatre
is a cultural center and theatre. The beautiful art deco building of Atrium was
reborn after 12 years of neglect, with a new function and a new vocation. It was
converted into a theatre, café, and community place, where art meets
entertainment and quality leisure time. Its programs include contemporary Hungarian
and international theatre, dance, and music performances; films and fine art.
Besides offering public relations and artistic, technical, and financial
support for artists, Atrium also stages its own productions every year,
participates in theatre and performance festivals, and cooperates with cultural
institutions. Atrium hosted „bEUgró” festival with almost 1500 performers, held
as part of the jubilee celebrations of Hungary joining the European Union in
2004. Atrium’s current director, László Magács supervised the event.
Atrium opened its
gates in October 2012, in Budapest. Atrium is a good example of how a civil
association can build a new financial model to effectuate a cultural institute.
Atrium’s funds come mostly from ticket sales and sponsorships, which give the
financial base for the 10-13 premieres per season, the assistance to host
several independent theatre companies, and to house around 250 performances and
almost 60,000 visitors each year. Our technical facilities, the capacity, and
the professional catering personnel make Atrium an ideal venue for various
events in a wide variety of styles and forms. Atrium invites young artists, dramaturges,
actors, directors, and designers to collaborate on projects. Atrium is open to artistic
projects that discuss important social topics, such as gender issues, violence,
social changes, and exclusion in Hungary. Both entertainment and education are
an important part of the artistic concept, as well as offering a place for
local and professional communities. The staff is skilled for both working on
hosted shows, as well as on original productions, with an entire artistic crew
at the ready.
Atrium is an
important platform for international collaborations, utilizing the different
areas of performing arts to create new productions. Film, contemporary visual
culture, and the elements of theatre combined create the unique image of
Atrium. The 20-years-old relationships of Merlin Theatre (the previous
institute run by the foundation), and the European and American collaborations
help us exhibit the most contemporary, new theatrical directions and successes
in Budapest.

About Closer
English
playwright, Patrick Marber’s play premiered in 1997 in London; making Marber
and his work immediately world-renowned. Closer
did not only conquer stages all around the globe, but the 2004 movie directed
by Mike Nichols had famous actors like Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Jude
Law, and Clive Owen starring in the lead roles.
In Hungary,
several theatres had the play previously on show: the former Vidám Színpad (Central
Theatre, 2006), Móricz Zsigmond Theatre (2009), Merlin Theatre (2011),
Vörösmarty Theatre (2012), National Theatre of Pécs (2014).
What We Need & What You Get
With this Indiegogo
campaign, we would like to raise $16,800 that would be distributed in the
budget as follows:
Set and
costume design: $7,500
Honorariums
(director, dramaturge, assistant, actors, set and costume designers): $7,500
Advertising,
PR: $1,800
Risks & Challenges
By 2015 the Hungarian culture funding has reached the point where the
layer of consumers who can afford it need to step up and become a part of
supporting culture, thus taking individual responsibility for it. Without it,
the financing and freshness of culture, art and theatre, and the work of
artistic communities will be impossible. The whole budget of the campaign will
become a part of an easily traceable accounting system, with the whole
accounting done by the charitable foundation behind Atrium (English Language
Theatre Charitable Foundation), that will also be responsible for signing
contracts with the creative personnel working on the production. 011 Production
Group and Atrium aspire to create a clear and optimal budget with the campaign
that will ensure the quality of the production.
