Who am I?
I am the art teacher at Dixie Canyon Charter Community School in Sherman Oaks, CA, and the founder of Art Projects for Kids.org. After traveling to Haiti to work with children, I made friends with three amazing young men – Romel Jean Pierre, Racine Polycarpe and Claudel Cassius. Last summer they were awarded an artist in residency at Recology in San Francisco. On their way home to Port-Au-Prince, Claudel and Racine visited my school for a day. The students were delighted to have such special guests, and were buzzing with excitement throughout the day.
What is my goal?
My goal is to have Romel, Racine and Claudel come back to California next spring and this time teach Haitian art for a full week so that each class can have some individual time with them. A total of 730 students would be able to learn firsthand what it's like to make art in one of the poorest
countries on earth, without ever leaving our campus. Romel, Racine and Claudel would also have a chance to
further their own artistic careers. Every new contact they make in the US offers potential for new art shows and sales, and a chance for a brighter future.
What do I need now?
PHASE ONE: Airline tickets from Port-Au-Prince to Los Angeles
Each ticket approximately $800 x 3: $2400
What will come next?
PHASE TWO 2015: Apartment Rental, 14 days x $125 day: $1750
Living Expenses $30/day x 14 days x 3: $1260
GRAND TOTAL: $3010
