About us:

We are a small studio based in Italy, experimenting with colour and materiality from nature, translated into creative and sustainable design solutions. Laura is a passionate Colombian designer, maker and colour hunter, she recently graduated  from MA Material Futures (previously called Textile Futures) at the renown Central Saint Martins College of Design in London.

About DIY Colour Recipe Book:

DIY Colour Recipe Book by Studio Laura Daza is a useful handbook for everyone who wants to experiment with colour. It tells the story of 8 ancient colours: Whiteshell, Saffron, Ochre, Verdigris, Malachite, Azurite, Mummy Brown and Lamp Black. We work as traditional alchemists and let the reader get acquainted in a visually attractive way with the craftsman preparation of age-old colour pigments.

This recipe book is part of the Colour Provenance project, which is a visual investigation and interpretation into the ancient origins of colour pigment. Through developing a thorough understanding and knowledge of how colour was once sourced, crafted and utilized in the past, we hope to both celebrate the ancient rituals and alchemic techniques and encourage us to once again appreciate colour provenance.

Different shades, colours and hues have the power to overwhelm, but it seems that the origins and journeys of these pigments are obscure and forgotten. Today, colour is a commodity mechanically made and claimed for mass consumption, once colour had a unique aura, power and magic that brought stories alive.

For instance, recreating green from malachite, considered to be the first green ever used by humanity or white from ostrich eggshells, which was commonly used by Egyptians and even mummies for making an extinct colour 'Mummy Brown. The revival of historical recipes for making colour such as Cennino Cennini's 'Il libro dell'Arte' and ancient Egyptian manuscripts, were part of the process and inspiration.

This book will take you through a fascinating journey into the past to help us understand and appreciate colour in a different way today.

We launched the DIY Colour Recipe Book in June 2014 in English. We have been selling a printed and ebook version of the book online and it has been successful. Readers have responded positively to it. People are engaged in learning more about colour alchemy, the story and the processes to extract colour. For instance, DIY Colour Recipe Book has reached many readers and press worldwide, which is really amazing, but we are aiming to increasing our readers community.

For the past year, we have been working intensively on our DIY Colour Recipe Book and we would like to continue with this amazing project. We are ready to take the next step – printing 500 copies of the book!

The Next Step:

We started DIY Colour Recipe Book with just 2 hardcopies, which were quite expensive to print. Then we printed 5 new copies that we sold directly to the reader, while we exhibited our project in London. After that, we realized that we could sell a printed and ebook version online through self-publish and this has been positive but its still expensive. However, we have always wanted to print more copies of our book and so we believe Indiegogo could help us fund this project and reach our goal of more copies.

We are planning to improve and edit our book and release a new version of it by this year. Also we need approximately 500 copies so the cost may lower and therefore the retail price. This new issue will be printed in colour on a high quality paper and use a hardcover. We are also planning to host an event and colour workshop in London were we could launch our DIY Colour Recipe Book.

We need you help:

In order to reach our goal we truly NEED YOUR HELP. By donating any amount and  spreading the word of our campaign you are helping us. You will be helping us to:

·fund the production of DIY Colour Recipe Book printed issue

·cover shipping costs

·continue our research on colour provenance and colour alchemy for future books

·continue our collaboration with great photographers and designers

·cover expenses such as studio rent

Risks and challenges:

Our biggest risk is that we do not reach our funding goal of €1,500.

We are extremely passionate, honest and motivated people, we are confident that we will be able to overcome any challenge that may arise after having reached our goal.

Regarding our experience, we have been working in fast paced environments, developing team work projects, learning how to solve problems and looking for new opportunities. We develop projects at a professional level.

Issues relating printing quality, late delivery may be addressed in a professional way directly with the printing company. That is why we are looking for a good and trustful printing company to start working with.

This campaign has been launched by Studio Laura Daza. The different rewards and souvenirs have already been produced by us in our studio such as postcards, pigment samples, colour chips and swatchbooks. We will be sending this rewards by June 2015.
