As seen on The Daily Dot and Splitsider!
GOLD.#comedyforgirls will give teenage girls* the comedy skills and life skills they need to SLAY.
*Come one, come all who identify in some way as girls!
WHY GIRLS? Because girls are a riot. We'll train them to:
● tell a joke.
● command a stage.
● own their stories.
● amplify their voices. Literally. With a microphone! Also metaphorically.
● pursue a dream.
WHY COMEDY? Comedy is confidence. Comedy is power. Comedy is FUNNY. Funny is good.
WHY NOW? "It's a great time for women in comedy!" Well, it's...okay. We can still do a LOT more to open doors, bust stereotypes, and make sure every girl is as strong, loud, and funny as she wants to be. [ESPECIALLY post-election, and that's all we're gonna say about that.]
THIS IS GONNA BE BIG. We've got big plans for an online learning, content creation, and collaboration hub into a big new factory for all kinds of funny. We'll grow it into a massive adventure that changes lives, perceptions, and the very face of comedy. Which kind of changes everything.
BUT FIRST! WE PILOT. To do that right, we need to start small. Make sure our ideas are on track. Make sure people like and want to do what we do.
HENCE OUR FREE WORKSHOPS. We're planning to offer a couple of face-to-face pilot workshops for New York City girls in joke-writing, persona-building, and performance. They'll be low-key, bare bones, and scrappy: all about FUNNY, not fancy. We'll make it a great day for all. In order to do that, minimum, we need:
-
Teachers. We've got real pros lined up. They've been very generous with their time AND we want to pay them. ($400 per workshop)
-
Mic rental. We're saving money by using non-club space. But we still need to teach these comics to use a mic! ($40 per workshop)
-
Food. Pizza for lunch, snacks, dinner between class and performance, refreshments for parents and friends who attend the mini-show. ($100 per lunch per workshop, $150/dinner, $40/refreshments)
-
Swag. Let's give participants beautiful yet practical keepsake notebooks. ($50 per workshop)
- And other costs of doing comedy business!
