"What is the name of this dance company,
Siza?"
- Pronounced see-zuh
- lyndSI ZApata (Artistic Director / Choreographer)
- "Si" is also "yes" in Spanish.
- The word "yes" is an underrated word if you think about it. We use "yes" to give an affirmative response, or as a response to someone addressing one or otherwise trying to attract one's attention. This all felt very appropriate towards our mission.
- Za, comes from the first two letters of the surname Zapata.
- So? For those who may be unaware, the surname Zapata is a popular one in the Latino community, especially in the Mexican community. Emiliano Zapata was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo.
- In a sense: Yes to Revolution.
"Why do you need $7,500?"
The Nitty Gritties of Bare Bones
- Space to rehearse costs $30/hour
- We will be rehearsing 2 hrs/week
- =$60 a week
- $60/wk for 8 months = $1,920
- We have 8, fierce, strong, unique movers.
- Ideally, dancers will be paid $10/hr of rehearsal
- We will be rehearsing 2 hrs/week
- Paying 8 dancers/week = $160
- Paying 8 dancers/8 months = approx $5,120
- Money to be distributed for collaborators = approx $460
$1,920
+ $5,120
+ 460
= $7,500
Challenges
Building a dance company from the ground up is no easy feat. There's the schedule of the dancers, finding affordable and healthy space to rehearse, that space's availability, applying for performances opportunities, creating our own opportunities. However, these are all very manageable with hard work, communication and compromise.
It is when we talk about finances that we hit our wall. Paying for space, dancers, collaborators, application fees, and should we have the privilege to perform, this will also cost a pretty penny.
We feel optimistic that $7,500 is a goal we can reach, but we can't do it without your help! Whether you can donate $5 or $500, we want to show our gratitude. From thank you notes to complimentary tickets, posters to season passes. Check out the perks you can receive!
"Listen, a cup of coffee isn't even in my budget these days."
Other Ways You Can Help
Some just can't contribute, and we are sensitive to that, but that doesn't mean they can't help!

About The Artistic Director / Choreographer
Lyndsi Zapata was born in Portland, OR, where she studied dance throughout her childhood. In her high school years, she would spend her mornings receiving her high school diploma (Lincoln High School) and dance from mid-day into the evening (Jefferson High School) moving with dance companies; Jefferson Dancers II, as well as Urban Arts. Dance brought Zapata to further her training at California Institute of the Arts, where she invested in her passion for choreography. Her craft has also opened travel opportunities, such as studying in Seoul, South Korea (Korea National University of Arts) as well as Lucca, Italy (Dance Italia). After graduating in May 2016, Zapata looks forward to developing Siza as a movement platform for young artists who share complimentary interests in the Los Angeles area.![]()
