Tremors, Evacuate!
7.0 on Richter scale!
6.9 Magnitude Quake!
Catastrophic 9.0 Earthquake!
Though these are small decimals, but they represent huge damage when it comes to Earthquakes, which are unpreventable acts of nature beyond the control of humans. These account for huge loss of human life and economical resources following their
occurrence and often leads to adverse effects on the economy of a nation.

It is evident that we cannot STOP it, but what if we could predict it prior to its occurrence? We can curtail the heavy losses of life and economy. And thus here we have Cu-REO to do the work for us!
What is Cu-REO?
Cu-REO,
CubeSat for Remote Earth Observation(s), is an initiative by students of University
of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), India, to design and develop a
nanosatellite which is going to aid in prediction of the earthquakes prior
to their occurrence.
In
the initial stage it will be used as a 'test bed for verifying the hypothetical
research work in the detection of seismic activity by studying the perturbations
in the magnetic field of Earth', however, in later stage it will be used to detect the earthquakes solely.
This is what Cu-REO looks like:

Wouldn’t
it be great to know about earthquakes before they actually hit us? Well, these
perturbations are observed prior to actual occurrence with a time span
varying from a week to a even a month.
Weighing merely a kilogram and having dimensions of 10 x 10 x 10 cm, this cube is being designed to do wonders.
Cu-REO is first CubeSat to be designed for such
an operation. Its ancestor, the Demeter satellite was launched in 2004 by
France, for carrying out a similar task, but the satellite was much larger and
the project, much costlier.
Lets have a look at the various components/systems being installed on-board this satellite:

Cu-REO would be deployed at altitude ranging in between 675 – 750 km, where it will carry
out this task. Since these perturbations fall on the Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF)
and Very Low Frequency (VLF) bands of the magnetic wave spectrum of earth, a
high sensitivity magnetometer is being installed on-board Cu-REO, to detect the
required electromagnetic field perturbations.
Benefits Of The Project
- Panacea for losses relating Earthquakes
Verification of the hypothetical work relating the prediction of earthquakes is the main motive of the mission. If proved successful, it will help the society reduce the losses due to earthquakes.
-
Effective Way of Providing Student's Education.
Cubesats provide students a platform to deal with real-life problems and proves to be an efficient way of inculcating the true aspect of subject in them.
- Paves a path for Young Minds in country
Such a technical development looked forward to pave the way for a large student audience in
country allowing the fresh minds to explore the space for advancement in space sciences.
Get Involved
Cu-REO on its voyage to serve for the society has already traveled its
journey through its theoretical foundation and is now soaring ahead to take its
real form, requiring your support.
Being a team of University students, we
invite you to get involved in our project and help us in bringing Cu-REO
to life.
This campaign aims at collecting funds for all the aspects
of the satellite project including the highly advanced on board components. All
the funds that are collected will go towards the project budget account and
would help us make progress in our mission, one step at a time. We sincerely
hope you like our project and are willing to become a contributor in our
endeavor.
What You Get
Since your support and interest is all that matters to us, we won’t let
you go empty-handed. Team Cu-REO offers a wide range of perks to choose from,
for each level of contribution that you make. You could get yourself some
exciting goodies and mission-themed customized merchandise such as posters,
coffee mugs and t-shirts etc. for your sincere help and support towards our project.
You can browse through the available list of perks and make an appropriate selection
from there. For any further info you can reach us at: info@cureosat.in
How It’s Going To Help
Cu-REO,
being a student project, is going to provide students a platform to learn and
enhance their skills and knowledge by implementation of Science and
Engineering to practical, real-life problems. Throughout its voyage, Cu-REO is
going to create opportunities for everyone connected with the project, be it
the team, the mentors, the contributors, the supporters etc. For society as a
whole, we feel that Cu-REO is a significant step towards advancement of
humanity. With such technological developments we are sure have a positive impact
on society, and make progress towards a safer and brighter future for all.
However,
to be brought to life, Cu-REO needs your support! Our team stands out on the
technical background and scientific knowledge and has had a great opportunity
to carry out this task. But what is required now is a financial foundation to
bring this satellite project to reality.
Our team invites your support and contributions, to help bring this cube to life, promising a bright future for the budding scientists and engineers of tomorrow.
Risks And Challenges
-
Delay in satellite integration
Good time frame has been taken into consideration to deal with the various phases of the project work, however, team looks forward to compensate on the time laps that may occur during the project work.
-
Inability to fulfill benefits
Team Cu-REo looks forward to provide you with the alternative benefits if the mentioned perks are not being provided to you in case of unaviodable circumstances.
- In case on insufficient fund collection
Being a student project, in case of insufficient collection of funds for the project, the team promises to direct these funds to the UPES Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) chapter, which looks after various social issues of the society.
Other Ways You Can Help
