What is Cubbit?

Cubbit is the distributed cloud. It is designed to give you privacy and safety, all while being eco-friendly. Cubbit runs on a peer-to-peer network of distributed nodes owned by the users. It employs encryption and a zero-knowledge cryptographic architecture, so that no one else, not even us, is able to access your data.

Where are my files stored?

Once you upload them on Cubbit, your files are encrypted and fragmented in several redundant chunks. Each of these chunks is then saved on someone else’s Cubbit Cell. Long story short, many Cubbit Cells have a small undecryptable piece of your files, but you alone are able to piece it together.

How do you guarantee my privacy?

The system is zero-knowledge. Files uploaded on the Cubbit Cell are encrypted with AES-256, fragmented in multiple redundant chunks, and distributed over the network through end-to-end encrypted channels. The user's password is not known by Cubbit nor by the coordinator server, and its related randomly-generated encryption key is stored client-side. Bottom line: no one without your password can access your files, not even Cubbit.

Are my files safe?

Your password is the only way to access your data. As long as you keep your password safe, your files are safe.

How is the Cubbit Cell different from a NAS?

Three key differences.

First, Transfer speed: transfers from/to Cubbit take advantage of multiple, parallel, p2p connections, while with a NAS you are limited by your own bandwidth.

Second, security: no one, even with physical access to your Cell, can access your data, since they are not stored on your Cell but distributed over the Cubbit network.

Finally, fault-tolerance: if your NAS goes offline for any reason you lose access to your files. Instead, if your Cubbit Cell goes offline you can still access your files.

How about the 4-year warranty?

The Cell comes covered by a four-year warranty, during which you will receive a new Cell if any hardware fault that falls under the warranty conditions occurs. After that period, you will be free to access the hard drive inside the Cell and manually replace it. Note: modifying the Cell during the warranty period will invalid the warranty itself.

Where do you ship from? What about Import/Export?

Our supplier, Globalscale Inc., is an American company with main facilities in Shenzen, China. Once produced, the Cubbit Cells are sent to Hong Kong and shipped globally with multiple carriers. So, currently, Hong Kong is the exporting country. Although import policies depend on each country’s laws and vary significantly globally, shipping small parcels to individuals is generally not subject to duties under a certain value threshold. Few backers have been asked for customs fees thus far.

What if my internet connection is down?

No problem: whatever happens, you can always access your files. The Cubbit network is fault-tolerant, meaning that come hell or high water, your files remain safe within the Cubbit network, since they are not stored on your Cell, but distributed in the form of dozens of encrypted chunks across a large network of other people’s Cubbit Cells.
