IN THIS VIDEO YOU CAN HEAR WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE DANDYCAN HEADPHONES:
MORE ON THE STORY OF DANDYCAN HEADPHONES:
The Background & The Insights
DANDYCAN HEADPHONES is a project that was started two years ago when Daniel Åhman, a Scandinavian product designer, realized that he had bought a new pair of headphones almost once a year for the last twenty years. He thought to himself that it made no sense at all.
So he started pondering over why most of the headphones on the market were so crappy.
The conclusion and insight was that most of the products are made out of plastic and are also poorly designed.
Many headphones have mechanics and mechanisms that are weak and even unnecessary for the user. And besides that (and sometimes because of that) they often look ugly too.
Another thing that he found very annoying is that the cables always break which results in throwing the whole product away. That is not exactly environmentally friendly and feels like a total waste.

The start
So, instead of buying a new pair he decided to start a project with the goal to design durable headphones that would be a much more sustainable alternative to what is currently on the market.
Right from the start he chose to simplify the mechanics and to use materials that would not break. He also focused on solutions in which the whole product would not be disposed of in case of wear and tear. But besides being durable and more sustainable, they also needed to be aesthetically pleasing.
The Result – Almost indestructible, aesthetic and sustainable
The DANDYCAN headphones are all metal and leather with no breakable mechanics. The design combines modern and retro and has a sleek and classic look. It is made to be easy and simple to change the cable and the ear pads because they are actually the only parts that might eventually wear out. Scandinavian design at its best!

Why is this important for you?
You will reduce your waste and feel better about not throwing crappy things away. You will also have a nice and durable product that you don’t need to replace every year. We also think that you will enjoy their high-quality feel, their acoustics and their design and style.
But ultimately you will save a tiny bit of the earth and that should make you feel better.

Why are we here to ask for your support?
To be able to produce these fine headphones we need to invest in very expensive tooling. We also need to order a minimum quantity of 3000 pieces so that the vendor can assure the quality of the headphones. So, even if you help us get fully funded, we will still need to put money into this project. But you will give us an opportunity to actually make a difference, and you will give us a good start on our mission to make durable products and offer people a sound lifestyle.

Are you also tired of crappy products?
We hope that you will fund us by signing up for these dandy headphones. Dandycan headphones are not only beautiful, sleek and stylish but also durable and long-lasting. We want to offer you a sound and sustainable lifestyle and ultimately we will save (a tiny bit of) the earth.

More about the product
Acoustics
We believe that premium acoustics on a premium headphone should be standard. The combination of an
acoustic chamber in aluminium and a high quality 40 mm premium speaker is
probably the best start you can get. We then used an acoustic lab to
tune and trim the sound curves to what we believe are great acoustics. We have achieved excellent acoustics on the mock-up but we will continue to fine tune during the next phase to create the perfect acoustics. The specifications may therefore change (for the better) during the next phase.
Design
We have kept the design
classical, clean and simple. We have added some design features that make them look a little
retro. You could call the design modern retro but most of all we strived to
make them look sleek and dandy.
To summarize the design
process we used emotions as a guide. If they looked good, sounded good, and were comfortable to wear, users would feel happy wearing them.
Mechanics
We wanted to minimize
the mechanisms in these headphones because so often they add something negative to
the design. There was a challenge to make the mechanisms strong enough without
making the headphones too big or lose their comfort. But we could not compromise the height adjustment because people have different head
sizes :-) . We therefore divided the height adjustment between two principals; some
adjustment with an elastic headband and some with a slider. We found just having the slider adjustment would give you the crazy antenna look and just having
the headband adjustment would make you look like an alien if
you have a small head :-) . So the compromise between the principals was the best
practice in this case.
Ergonomics
We have also worked a
lot with the ergonomics of the product. The headphones' tilt is pre-angled to accommodate most peoples actual head size and shape. We have also
chosen the softest and most comfortable protein leathers and memory foams available on market.
Environmental & Social responsibility
We take Mother Nature
seriously. One of the main focus on the Dandycan headphones has been to make them durable so you don't need to consume new headphones all the time. We have also built the headphones to be very easy to disassemble
and with materials that are easy to recycle. We also have a
vision in the future to offer people the possibility to send back
the product so we can reuse parts to build refurbished products and
recycle whats left. We even would like to sell products with these used parts so
that the headphones look used (like an old pair of jeans) but still with new speakers, cable and ear pads. We would like to make limited editions to support something we believe would make the world a better place. Some of the profits from this edition will then be donated to support the cause.
Time Plan and Risks
Dandycan is a straight forward product and a lot of the work has already been done to reduce any potential risks. We have already visited and collaborated with the sourcing and manufacturing partners. The main risk in this project, would be poor quality from assembly and mechanical suppliers. We’ll reduce this risk by visiting mechanical suppliers and we will be present during product-builds, assembly and testing.
