Detainee is a political thriller about one woman balancing devotion to family against devotion to country.
Lindsey is a middle-aged college professor who drives a middle-aged van and lives in a middle-aged house. She's a middle-aged Mom with a middle-aged husband. She also has middle-aged problems, mostly stemming from her wayward teenage daughter, with whom she has a strained relationship.
Outside of home, Lindsey has another problem. The United States is reeling from a string of domestic bomb threats. But when the threats turn real, and the first bomb explodes, Lindsey is asked to return to her former identity. And ultimately Lindsey must choose between allegiance to country and the sanctity of her home.
Detainee is a play about a decision -- whether or not to torture a U.S. citizen.

Between Us Productions is committed to bringing daring and compelling theater about controversial issues to our audiences by new and emerging artists.
We met Sam Graber when he participated in our Annual Take Ten Festival for several consecutive years. After watching many productions of his, we are finally getting to work with him with Detainee. We are so happy to be working with and helping to support this emerging artist.
Born in March 2010, this company is the result of two long time collaborators, director, Samantha Lee Manas, and writer, Jasmine Brown. 2013 saw our first annual Take Ten Festival, a festival of ten minute plays from playwrights around the country in which the best playwrights fight to win. Between Us Productions has produced several other productions by emerging artists including: The Fairer Sex, Uprising, Parables for the One Percent, and Behaving Badly: An Evening of One Acts.
In order to bring this play to life, we need funds for the theater rental, costumes, props, lighting, scenic elements, and artist fees. Every little bit helps. Check out our perks to see what you can get!
As the war on terrorism continues, it is now more important than ever for us to discuss the use of torture as a method for finding out information. Is it okay if we are just torturing foreign terrorists? What if we start torturing American citizens? How far will we let it go?
Discussing controversial issues can be very difficult. Often, people just want shallow entertainment, but this is a play that is entertaining and socially challenging . However, we find it paramount to bring these issues to light and continue the conversation on them. Taking a position can be risky and challenging, but we are up to the task.
