About this film...
The transformation of “Don’t Pick Up” from a play to a film is a dream almost 18 years in the making.
The original play was written, performed in festivals, won awards and was published. Then, with the encouragement of Jeremiah Kipp, my long-time collaborator, it was re-imagined as a short film to showcase the talents of two brilliant actors who are well known for living fully both onstage and on film.
When I have been asked what “genre” this falls into, I usually say: “It’s a “Dark Romantic Comedy.” A bit like“ Brief Encounter”--- with a kleptomaniac and a guy who runs a children’s bookstore. There is something about the story of Louisa and Chris – two lonely hearts awkwardly reaching across the void to try to connect and the obstacles without and within that keep them from that connection – that seems poignantly of this moment where loneliness and isolation are more acute than ever before. Yet in spite of it all we yearn for love. Hope springs eternal. And even if that hope is continually dashed, we soldier on and bravely hope that it will come through the door again. So it is with Louisa and Chris.
Two and a half years ago when we embarked on our pre-production for “Don’t Pick Up” we had big plans and no pandemic. COVID has presented its own set of challenges for filmmakers, but even without a pandemic to navigate, making a film can be costly and we find ourselves needing a bit more on the production side to get this film fully across the finish line. Impact
Filmmaking is filled with challenges, the greatest of which is financing. Producing a film is far more expensive than it seems and now with the additional COVID obstacles, our challenges are even greater. But these past two years have taught us many valuable lessons, one of the greatest being the invaluable presence of art in our lives. By supporting our award-winning team of filmmakers, you will have a hand in continuing to bring art into our homes and lives, and you will be helping artists get back to work!
