I’m Sarah Goeke, I’m a writer/actor/producer from a small religious conservative town in Missouri and now I live and work in Queens, NY. I’m producing a mini series I wrote called FORKED.
What's FORKED?
FORKED is a 6 episode mini series about a woman healing from the purity culture of the bible belt through her sobriety and the dragon fantasy erotica audiobooks that she narrates. This story, while fiction, is largely based on my own experience of growing up with a promise ring and a prayer group book club to somehow winding up, 15 years later, narrating smutty fantasy romance novels in my closet in NYC. I wanted to create a map for how the fuck that happened. The map turned into a one woman show, which turned into a pilot, which turned into this sweet weird series. It explores elements of female desire, coming to terms with your old self, and the deeply challenging work of allowing yourself to evolve. I think if I could make a little window to a past me, this script is what I would send through the portal to the younger version of myself.
What We Need & What You Get
We need help funding this production. It’s self produced, which means it’s just me and this team making it. There aren’t any big producers, or entities helping pay for things (or telling us what to do or what to make:)). It is just our team working for 7 days of shooting - 6 actors working on the script, and 5 crew members keeping the set moving - all on a shoestring budget. Donating to this project would go straight to paying an artist to do what they do best.
BIG PICTURE BUDGET:
Production insurance - $1,500 (covers workman's comp, equipment, and location)
Actors - $3,200
DP - $2,400
Food - lunch/dinner daily - $2,000 (feeding 7 people 2 meals a day on average)
Housing - $1,600
Set dressing/costumes/props - $1,500
Post production (sound and color) - $2,000

If we’re not able to reach our goal, we’re still planning on moving forward in a limited capacity. We’ll have to cut episodes and shorten the length of the shoot to 3 to 4 days. We want to make something and with this group signed up we’re going to make stuff, whatever that ends up being.
The Impact
I created a project that explores female relationships inside purity culture, family dynamics, female desire and fantasy, and the beginning stages of change. Producing companies have an insane amount of power. And they use it. I want to produce work for myself and my colleagues that is about making something real, eccentric, and shows what it really feels like to change.
Giving to this production would create jobs for artists to make something genuine. There are so many real, relatable, finger-on-the-pulse-stories that never get made because filming anything is, honestly, just INSANELY hard. Truly, I didn’t understand how NEAR IMPOSSIBLE it is to even get to this point!! Just the sheer fact that there’s a team of people available and interested in the project is a miracle. But we also have discounted housing, a free location, directors donating their time and talent (!!), marketing donating their time and talents, art dept donating time and talents, DP working at discounted rates, post production working for discounted rates. ALL of these things are insane and the fact that they are all happening is one in a million moments. Giving to this project would make something nearly impossible, possible.
