Ceramics Experience

When I was in high school, I took my first ceramics class. I found that ceramics was the first artistic outlet where my creativity blossomed. I practiced for two years, taking all of the levels offered, including hand-building and a sculpture class. Before my senior year, the ceramic professor kindly created an Advanced Ceramics class for a group of very eager ceramic-loving students, including myself, who had already taken all of his classes. This class was very free-style, consisted primarily of wheel throwing and occasional lecture. My first raku, horse hair, firing was in this class.
During my very busy college years, I hadn't had the opportunity of taking another ceramics class. Currently, now that I'm feeling settled down from graduating and getting into the flow of the working life, I decided to take a ceramics class with a good friend. This was mainly a treat for myself during the dark, chilly days of winter and to re-establish a former passion. As I hoped, centering the damp clay beneath my grip was ingrained in my muscle memory.
This beginners class is taught by Jeremy Ayers through Burlington City Arts (BCA) at the Main Street Clay Studio. After relearning old techniques I had once known, learning new techniques and surrounding myself with inspirational ceramic artists, my 8-week class is coming to a close. As I am still practicing glazing and my mind is flowing with more education and ideas on how to improve my pottery skills, I've realized that I need to continue practicing ceramics.

The Next Step and How You Can Help

My spirit has been jumping for joy and taking this class has opened up a door of growing excitement that I do not want to close again. The mindfulness of the art of wheel throwing has made me very excited, it has centered my well being, encouraged my creativity and put me more at peace with stresses in my life. Ceramics has given me an opportunity to do something on my own, branch out with other people of the community and feel more apart of Burlington. In many ways, it's extremely important to many aspects of my life.
My plan is to rent studio space during this summer, until the next level ceramics class is offered. This is likely 3-6 months until the next class. The fall / winter class schedules have not been posted yet but they do happen at least once annually. I'm not sure what other modalities are like, but I have found that ceramics cost a little bit more than I can afford currently. Below is the BCA's rent rates and benefits of a studio space:

STUDIO RATES

Clay Studio rental costs $55 per month with discounts available for the purchase of rental in 3, 6 and 12 month increments.

- 1 month - $55
- 3 months - $148.50 (10% off)
- 6 months - $280.50 (15% off)
- 1 year - $528 (20% off)

All rentals due on the 1st of the month. Any new renters will be prorated $1.50/day if they join in the middle of the month to start them on the 1st of the month cycle.

STUDIO BENEFITS

- Use of wheels, slab roller, extruder and facilities
- More than 20 studio hours per week, many on weekends
- Storage space for work and supplies
- Opportunities to exhibit work

Studio hours change monthly based on class schedules. The Clay Studio is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm for studio tours, inquiries, and to pick up work. Call the studio at 802.860.7474 for more information.

My Goals

This website will only allow me to put $500 dollars for a minimum goal. As you see from the rates above, $528 could get me an entire year of ceramics studio space! This is not my goal. My goal is to rent space until a class is offered. Although it would be great, I just need funding for 3-6 months ($148.50 - $270.50).  If this goal is not reached, I can still use your generous gifts towards rent for the studio space. If this goal is reached or fulfilled beyond $500, the extra donations will be used towards the class that I am saving up for or more studio rent in the future. Having studio time before my next class will help me hone my skills and with your help, I can save my money over the next few months to save for the next class (costing >$200). Every bit helps!
The Perks!
If you make a contribution between $5 - $25, I will send you a nice piece of pottery! If you can donate more, I can create and send pottery piece(s) of your suggestion. It can be piece you would like to have custom made for a gift or a functional piece for your home. What are your favorite earthy colors? I can glaze to colors of your interest as well!

Other Ways You Can Help

If you cannot contribute, that's OK! It doesn't mean you cannot help. Spread the word or come to an art showing that I hope to have in the future. Your positive energy is already investing in my pursuit of pottery!

Be well folks and embrace your passions!
