Update: I am at the summit now thanks to all that have contributed, particularly David who bought me a return ticket so I could for sure attend and make it home. The amount of support, financially and otherwise, has been amazing as is the program. For the first time, in a long time, I feel like I'm getting somewhere. A quote for the course "vulnerability- to allow the winds of life to blow over your soul". We are about half way to the goal, so I can continue taking steps toward my dreams and this education is simply the first step!

As a young child I was always told, you must either choose to work with your mind or do work with your hands. Growing up, I nurtured both sides and I found myself falling into a pattern of trying one side, finding something to be missing, only to switch and still be dissatisfied. In the physical realm, I have found I have a talent for helping people by teaching dance and through it expressiveness and empowerment. I learned that I wanted to be the dancer who could express and communicate their ideas the best. Better yet, I wanted to teach expressiveness and empowerment through the use of movement. In the past two years, I have been doing this through leading my student dance group and teaching many of my fellow college students the power and beauty of relating to others through dance and to have the confidence to approach learning something through playfulness and collaboration. I desire to take this talent to the next level to be able to empower even more dancers through helping them to connect to the emotional and relational aspects of partner connection.

About two years ago, I fell ill. There was a lot of pain and visits to the ER and doctors as we tried to figure out what was going on. It was determined I needed to have surgery and when I emerged, I found that I was now missing an ovary and had an incurable disease, endometriosis.

I kept working and pursuing my dreams anyway. I worked hard, pushing out of my comfort zone and juggling more doctor appointments and self care as my condition worsened, my class schedule, a job search, my own improvement as a dancer, researching scene building, research on partner dance communication, and my student’s education of dance and leadership. As things worsened I grew angry and bitter toward the condition, as it was stopping me from not only expressing myself but from teaching self expression to others. Bed ridden, my dreams seemed to be slipping through my fingers as I had to let go of what I wanted to do to focus on health. After a few months of fluctuating pain, and being jobless, I’ve realized that I needed to re-define my approach to working, dance and helping people. I believe I can still offer my gifts to the world, but I must find different ways to fit them in my life.

But this goal will take time and money. Through attending the ThrivingChangemakerSummit I’m being offered a way to still helping people in a less physical way and allows me to do good work while ill. By attending not only will I receive tools to increase my ability to teach dance but I can start training as a Life Coach. This would give me the training to do what I already do informally, helping people to be their best versions of themselves and to achieve their goals, on a much larger scale. Doing so would also give me financial stability while learning more about the dance industry and when considering attending grad school for dance movement therapy regardless of health.

With the money raised I plan to specifically put it towards these uses:

The Thriving Changemaker Summit (For leadership development and some life coach training)

The plane ticket to The TCS

BlueSHOUT/ other dance events

Miscellaneous things that contribute to my education in dance or life coaching or life in general ( dance shoes, doctors appointment, medication, long neglected basic necessities)
