Hello.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know our portable photographic enlarger - Enfojer. Once it is in production, it will enable you to develop black and white photo prints straight from your phone or developed films.

Enfojer was dreamt up by the two of us Vanda Voloder and Ilija Stjepić,  as we were looking for a way to print digital photographs from a phone. Four versions later we got a fully functional prototype. During the last year, it has been tested on a daily basis and in various conditions. It performs admirably.

Be funky, save photography

Enfojer bridges almost 200 years of photographic history, from the first camera to the most recent hybrid camera phones that made photography ubiquitous. It is our hope and desire that with this little gadget we preserve the old art of photo development and help you, and you, and you rediscover the magic that happens in a darkroom.

Enfojer is an educational tool for budding photographers, as well as entry-level photo enlarger for enthusiasts. That being said, we are sure professionals will get some kicks out of a portable darkroom.

Our best trick yet is printing photos a lot cheaper than with an average printer.
For our next trick, photos printed with Enfojer can last up to 70 years.

Put on a red light.

Kit contains all you need for happy photo development. Enfojer is sturdy and it can enlarge pics from any smartphone or film up to 6x6 format. Nice people from Ilford Photo agreed to provide a steady stream of quality photo paper. We picked them and they liked us because we share love for vintage photography technology.

Our kit includes a portable, battery powered red light, for those on the fly photo prints in your hotel bathroom darkroom.

Snappy photo development

Using the Enfojer is really simple. Take a photo, snap your fingers, adjust picture size, expose the paper, bath it, dry it and voila - exhibition ready prints up to 20x20 centimeters in size.

You will need some chemicals from a local photo store. We thought about bundling them as well, but international shipping of liquids is a bit complicated.

Chemicals used in a black and white photo development are not dangerous, but apply caution and read the handling instructions. Please.

Every Fojo is unique

Old school print development makes every print slightly different, due to microscopic imperfections in the silver halide coating on paper and the chemical reaction that turns parts of the coating black or grey. It means a lot of room improvise with the final outcome and improve your photos in the process.

Why Enfojer?

We love photography, as it once was. Smell of chemicals, red lights in small darkrooms, lines on which developed prints are drying. The moment of magic when the photo appears on the pristine white of photosensitive paper.

Now obsolete, this printing process is something romantic, beautiful and magical, worth preserving for future generations.

All we need for this little trip down the photographic history lane to be available to all, is a bit of your help.

Be a pal. Help us jumpstart Enfojer and get a bit of history repeating. Contribute what you can.

Share this with your fellow photo enthusiasts, invite friends, and foes alike - they can use the Enfojer to print photos too.

Of course, follow FOJO on Facebook or Twitter for updates.

Risks and challenges

Of course, there are some, but in a year and a half we have been working on this, we tested several types of material, photo papers, various builds and designs, people to work with and found partners in people from Ilford Photo. We hope everything will be all right and that you get to play with your Enfojer by February 2014. That leaves us with a lot of manouvering time, in case something does not go according to production plan. No worries, we know how to handle those. We learned it in the last year and a half.

FAQ

1. Can you develop color prints?

No. Developing color prints is a lot more complicated, demanding and chemically complex process. It is seriously toxic too, so we do not think it should be done at home for reasons of safety and health.

2. Which chemicals should you get and where do you get them?

We recommend ILFORD MULTIGRADE DEVELOPER or PQ UNIVERSAL in combination with ILFORD RAPID FIXER. You can get these in your local photo equipment store or just order them online. Of course, if you can't get Ilford, there are others. Experiment is half of the fun with Enfojer.

3. What lens are we using in the Enfojer?

It is a wide angle polycarbonate toy camera style meniscus lens. It blurs the image just right so you don't see the pixels on your print. Yeah, we tried sharper and better ones, but the results were too sterile.

4. How much room you need for a darkroom?

Any room that can be completely dark can be a darkroom. Bathrooms tend to be perfect as they have smaller windows or none at all and running water. You need running water (or a large bucket). Garages, basement storage rooms…any space you can isolate from light.

You don't need a lot of space, as the Enfojer takes 283 mm x 260 mm, trays in our rack take 290 x 370 mm, or each tray on it's own is 285 x 285 mm. So you need at least a 60 cm up to a meter of level surface. Anything more is darkroom luxury.

5. What is the light source for printing out of negative films?

Your phones bright LED screen. It's enough.

6. What materials are used in Enfojer production?

Base and tray rack are made out of anodized aluminum. Enfojer itself is mainly glass-reinforced polyamide, ultra high quality durable plastic. Tongs and trays are made out of lighter and softer plastics, to lower the cost of manufacture and make them more functional.

7. How long does it take to make a print, altogether?

Once you have everything setup, from phone to finished print it takes exactly 6 minutes.

8. Why do you have to use the red light?

Mostly because it would be darn difficult working in the dark. Red light is used because majority of black-and-white papers is sensitive to blue, or blue and green light. Reds do not expose the paper.
