GREAT NEWS! We've reached our bare-bones production goal, and have greenlit Season 1! Now we're reaching for our STRETCH GOAL of $45,000, which will enable us to have modern 4K cameras, quality sound, vivid production values, and location rentals. But we need your help! Here's what we need:
- If we reach $30,000, we'll give all contributors of $125 or more two free tickets to "EXTRA ROOM: THE MUSIC," a concert in NYC featuring the great up-and-coming bands and artists who are lending their voices to the show;
- If we reach $38,000, all contributors of $150 or more will receive a special USB thumb drive with loads of unseen content, including our behind-the-scenes "blooper reel" and the shooting scripts from the first season;
- If we reach $45,000, we'll shoot an extra mini-episode, showing you the 'lost footage' from a hilariously disastrous cooking show made by two of our characters, Sava and Beau. (Think Beavis and Butthead, if they were super-gay. More than they already are.)
Here's what the show's about:
On Friends, the apartment was the size of Brazil. Sex and the City lived in penthouses. Will and Grace get hammered daily in their luxury condo. And sure, Girls SAID they were broke, but the digs seemed pretty sweet to us.
The sitcom version of New York City is NOT the real New York...not the one we know, at least, where budding artists, immigrants, and dreamers band together in small apartments to split costs, share warmth, and get closer to the subway.
Welcome to EXTRA ROOM, a web series about OUR New York City, right now, in 2019. Living large in tiny spaces, rapidly accelerating, searching for answers.
Our production company, A Certain Something, brought together a creative team for EXTRA ROOM who have won Obie Awards, written New York Times bestsellers, screened at Cannes, and won both film festivals and national playwriting awards.
We chose to make EXTRA ROOM from a desire to hear different voices, to realign perceptions of urban living, and bring an intersectional, diverse, pro-sex sensibility to characters like us, who aren't represented on television. The scripts for Season One have already received praise from creative minds behind Pose, Grey's Anatomy, Bear City, and The Bourne Identity.
We hope you like New York the way we do...weird, spicy, sexy, and knee-slappingly hilarious! We'll take you on an emotional ride through bad dates on the Lower East Side, concerts in SoHo, breakups in Bushwick, gay brunches in Harlem, booty calls in Washington Heights, and ambulances in Inwood. You are the driving force behind EXTRA ROOM, and we want you to be a part of it!

What We Need & What You Get
We're trying to raise at least $25,000 here on Indiegogo, and hopefully more of our overall budget of $100,000 to shoot the six episodes of Season One. It's real television -- each episode is a full 22-minutes! There are over two dozen locations, 35 speaking roles, and a production crew of nearly 60. This graph spells it out where the budget goes:

The great news: through private funding and this campaign, we've already covered much of our post-production budget! We've made it to our minimum goal, but we're hoping to raise $45,000 here, which will allow us the resources to fully realize our dream show. Any additional funds raised will greatly enhance our production and location options. If we don't reach our entire goal, we will begin production while pursuing additional funding to complete the season.
We've got some VERY unique perks in store for you, to show our gratitude. You can name a character in someone's honor (Aunt Phyllis? RuPaul? Queen Elizabeth?), or spend a day on the set with us. We've got tickets to our World Premiere, and roles you can play onscreen! My favorite idea came from the cast -- they want to do a total makeover of your dating app profile! Personally, we hope you'll grab our power lunches, or truly magnificent swag items....check out the entire list of perks on the right, and be sure to read the benefits inside...we've hidden a few "Easter Eggs" there -- surprise benefits to make them extra special!
The Impact
Our writers were challenged to create characters they'd never seen on television before. And wow, did they deliver -- non-binary farmhands, sexy gay bears, genderfluid chefs, post-Trump immigrants. We're disturbed by shows populated exclusively by white characters...or for that matter, exclusively black characters, or exclusively LatinX characters, etc. Doesn't anyone have friends like us, of many races, heritages and backgrounds? Can we all be on one show?
We feel strongly about shattering traditional notions of beauty on EXTRA ROOM -- tall and short, skinny and thick, dark and light, different sizes and shapes, and intergenerational relationships are all a part of our story. This is the world as we know it, and the world we want to share.
Risks and Challenges
This kind of story isn't for everyone, of course...but we think we're on to something. EXTRA ROOM builds and expands upon the worldview espoused by Pose, Insecure, This Is Us, Sense8, Orange is the New Black, Master of None and Atlanta...all of which successfully explore peculiar and specific lives, with authenticity, savvy humor, and freshness.
As a team, we've got over 75 combined years of experience telling stories like this, in a variety of mediums. We just need a little help to make this peculiar, specific, beautiful, compelling, addictive story a reality!

Other Ways You Can Help
We really hope you'll contribute...even $15 would make a huge difference to this effort. If you can't, however, there are other ways to help!
First, we hope you'll share this Indiegogo Campaign on your social media, and encourage people to participate...let 'em know how much you care about stories like this!
And please, share us via email to anyone who might like EXTRA ROOM...we're building a community person by person, and your help would be invaluable!
