Almost two decades ago, Chuh and Rex, refugees from the indigenous tribes of Vietnam, fell in love and started a family in North Carolina. Chuh and Rex were childhood lovers who ended up raising a family of four daughters. In 2017, Chuh was deported to Vietnam, leaving his young wife and daughters in the U.S. The psychological and emotional punishment of being separated has made both of their lives extremely difficult. Chuh struggles to adjust to life in Vietnam, while Rex exemplifies resilience and skill as she balances raising her children, maintaining her long-distance relationship, working full time, and navigating the legal system for her husband’s return to the U.S.
The film follows Chuh and Rex's journey as they raise their family despite being physically separated and chronicles the challenges of life after deportation. The film also discusses the historical context of war, refugee resettlement, and criminalization, and highlights community organizing against deportation.
Gần 20 năm trước, anh Chuh và chị Rex người tị nạn Montagnard từ Việt Nam đã bắt đầu xây dựng một gia đình với 4 đứa con của họ ở tiểu bang North Carolina. Lúc năm 2017 anh Chuh bị trục xuất về Việt Nam và gia đình anh ấy bị tách biệt. Vì lý do này cuộc sống của anh Chuh và chị Rex rất khó và đau khổ. Ở Việt Nam anh Chuh không có quyền để tìm sự sống và đã sống trong tình trạng nghèo khổ. Ở Mỹ thì chị Rex phải nuôi dạy bốn đứa con của mình và cũng phải lo tìm cách đem chồng mình về để đoàn tụ gia đình.

Chuh and Rex's stories are unfortunately one of many stories about families being forced to seperate. A divisive and controversial thirty year war that divided America, devastating Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos and left over 2 million refugees to flee to countries like the United States. Currently, over 14,000 refugees from Southeast Asia are facing deportation. For people like Chuh and Rex, many of those serving deportation orders came to this country with very little, and never saw the “American Dream” they were promised. Although refugees became U.S. legal permanent residents, many individuals were stripped of their Green Cards as punishment for crimes that they committed for survival -- a result of inadequate resettlement programs and a racist criminal justice system. Their situations have been worsened in recent years, with a growing anti-migrant sentiment and new laws that have harshly criminalized immigrants and refugees and exponentially increased deportations. Families who have deportation orders must live with the fear of being picked up by ICE at any second, the challenge of working and surviving without paperwork, and the pain of family separation. Southeast Asian refugees have suffered at the hands of war and U.S. imperialism, survived immense amounts of violence and poverty in the areas they were resettled in, and for many, now face the potential of being forced to return to a country from which they fled. .

Câu chuyện của anh Chuh và chị Rex là một trong hàng ngàn câu chuyện về vấn đề chính sách chia tách gia đình nhập cư. Chiến tranh Việt Nam đã làm hơn 2 triệu người mất nước từ nước Việt Nam, Campuchia, và Lào. Các người tị nạn này phải trốn nước và định cư ở Mỹ. Hiện giờ hơn 14000 người Đông Nam Á đang sống trong nguy cơ bị trục xuất. Các người tị nạn giống anh Chuh và chị Rex đã sống ở Mỹ từ nhỏ nhưng đến bây giờ chưa tìm được cái American Dream. Các người tị nạn đến Mỹ sau chiến tranh Việt Nam là thường trú nhân hợp pháp nhưng nếu họ đã làm sai điều gì hay phạm tội thi Green card của họ sẽ bị lấy lại. Các chính sách chia tách gia đình nhập cư mấy năm qua đã tăng lên số người tị nạn bị trục xuất. Các người tị nạn đang sống trong nguy cơ bị trục xuất phải sống trong sự sợ hãi và lo lắng mỗi ngày. Các người tị nạn đã phải trốn quê hương của họ để tìm tương lai tự do nhưng bây giờ họ phải sống trong nguy cơ sợ hãi bởi vì họ có thể bị trục xuất.

The film has received generous funding from Sol Collective and the Critical Refugee Studies Collective, which covers the production and post-production costs of this project. Unfortunately, the funds we’ve received from these grants do not account for compensating the family featured in our film. We believe that it is our duty to compensate the documentary subjects fairly and help them reach their goal of family reunification.100% of the funds raised from this campaign will go toward compensating Chuh, Rex, and their daughters Nya, Ly-Yang, Jolie, and Evangeline who have opened up their homes and hearts to this project. They have privileged us as filmmakers and audiences to witness their love, heartbreak, and resilience. This is a labor of love and trust, which merits adequate compensation. Although we recognize that compensating documentary subjects is unconventional in the documentary field, we are strong advocates of creating reciprocal relationships between filmmakers and subjects, rather than extractive, unbalanced relationships. We believe that as documentary filmmakers, we have a responsibility to further social movements, which includes financial support. We hope that in the future, documentary filmmakers will consider this model and work social change into their budget, the same way one would work compensating an editor, cinematographer, or composer into the budget.
Chuh and Rex’s family plans on using their compensation to pay for post-conviction relief legal fees in hopes of sending Chuh home to his family, and to save up for family trips to Vietnam to visit Chuh.

We have finished gathering footage for the film and are currently entering the post-production stage. We are striving to finish the film in September 2019 and will submit the film to various film festivals around the world. We will also host community screenings across the country, which will be accompanied with educational events to empower audiences to become involved in the fight to end deportations. Additionally, we plan to release the documentary in February 2020 through a free online streaming platform in order to maximize exposure of these deportations, along with an educational guide so that viewers can engage in discussions and reflections about war, refugee resettlement, and immigration policy.

The Southeast Asian American community is the largest refugee community ever to resettle in America, following mass persecution and genocide during the Vietnam War, the Khmer Rouge-orchestrated genocide, and the mass bombing of Laos. To make an even bigger impact you can support work being done all over the country bringing awareness to the impact of deportation on Southeast Asians in the United States and working to end Southeast Asian deportations. Lan Nguyen
Lan Nguyen grew up in Long Beach, California as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees. She studied journalism and education at Northwestern University, and is currently attending UCLA in pursuit of her MA in Asian American Studies. She is a lecturer with California State University of Long Beach, where she teaches ethnic studies to high school students. Lan is active in community organizing with VietUnity-SoCal and utilizes filmmaking as a medium for social change.
Lan Nguyễn lớn len ở thành phố Long Beach tiểu bang California. Bố mẹ cô Lan là người Việt tị nạn. Cô Lan đã tốt nghiệp từ trường đại học Northwestern University và có bằng cấp Bachelor’s trong ngành báo chí và giáo dục. Hiện giờ cô ấy đang học ở trường đại học UCLA để lấy bằng cấp Master’s trong ngành Asian American Studies. Corleone Ham
Corleone Ham is a second generation, Cambodian American, son of refugees. He received a BA in Anthropology and minored in International Studies at the University of California, Irvine. When he was 14, he started organizing with Khmer Girls in Action working on Cambodian and Southeast Asian issues. He didn’t want to just learn how to make movies, but work with stakeholders in making sure that the stories we tell are held accountable.

She is passionate about amplifying nuanced stories of struggle and success among people of color and exploring topics related to immigration, culture, and educational development. Kitty is also in the process of completing her double B.A. in Film and Television and International Development Studies, with a minor in International Migration Studies at UCLA.
