Short Summary

Hi! My name is Wesley Vert, and I am a senior film production student at Bowling Green State University. I am currently working on my senior capstone project, Finn. This film combines two interests of mine that I am very passionate about: LGBTQ+ stories and D&D! The film has been a year in the making and has gone through many changes, but I am excited to start production on its best version. I am both the writer and director, and Finn has become a project for me to express and explore the stories I've heard in my community and of those close to me.

Finn is the story of Brandon and his journey of self-discovery. A college freshman, who has never had to question himself before, realizes the discomfort he has put up with in his own skin and in his daily life. Through experimentation and support within his small group of friends, we watch a character blossom into the person they have deep down always wanted to be. Finn is ultimately about identity and community, and both the anxiety and relief that comes with making that leap to become who you truly are with the support of those around you.

What We Need & What You Get

The money raised for this project will be going towards two things: taking care of the cast and crew, and equipment for the production. Without the cast and crew this project could not be made, so I want to take care of them as best as I possibly can. It is a four-day production and each day will have a free meal provided for the cast and crew. Food is expensive and I don't want to cheap out on the people who make up the backbone of this film. There are also several scenes that take place outdoors in nature. Although we are filming in October, cast and crew should have bug spray and sunscreen readily available to them.

There are also some equipment needs for the production. First, is what we need for data transfer and file storage. A hard drive and backup drive are a necessity. This will guarantee that no footage is lost during the production or post-production stages of the project. Next, we will need small, compact lights. Many scenes take place in a dorm room, which is a very small space to work in. To make sure we can still achieve the lighting for Finn that we want, we will require portable lights that we can setup in small places.

Lastly, any additional funds raised will go towards fees when the project is finished and being submitted to film festivals. This will be very beneficial in having Finn reach a wider audience and larger outreach.

For your generous contribution to this film there are several tiered perks offered:

  • Your name appears in the credits.
  • A print of the film's poster with a handwritten note of gratitude.
  • A DVD copy of the film.
  • Handmade decorative dice potion.

The Impact

At the end of the day, this is a student film, I don't plan on changing the world with it. However, I do believe that films like mine are important tools for representing people of the LGBTQ+ community. Even with LGBTQ+ media becoming more popular, non-binary people still see a lack of screentime and thoughtful representation. The non-binary experience is often overlooked when queer stories appear in film. It is my plan to change that. Finn includes relatable queer characters and representations of non-binary people. I think it is crucial that people are able to identify people like themselves on screen. Non-binary people are just as much deserving of that as anyone else. With supporting the production of Finn, you are supporting the inclusion and normalization of non-binary people in film.
