About the Project
Flashing Lights is an original play exploring how digital technology is radically shaping human evolution. The piece is a high tech fable about a family whose lives are changed forever when a video of the father goes inexplicably viral. The play weaves a hyper-realistic, absurd narrative, with the use of everyday technology like smart phones and tablets, into an atmospheric theatrical style that responds to our anxiety about the future and the speed of technological advancements.
Flashing Lights marks an important step in our artistic evolution. Through our use of projection and digital masks, this production pushes our work in a new direction, further developing our vision of a contemporary Canadian theatre and allowing us the opportunity to spark the imaginations and thoughts of our audiences both young and old.
Pay it Forward: Help Us Share Our Work!
We need your support to subsidize tickets for those who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend live Theatre. Most tickets for live Theatre in Toronto range from $30 to over $100. While these prices reflect the real costs incurred by Theatre companies, many community members can't afford to attend. We want to change this! Tickets to our production are pay-what-you-can-afford. Audience members can choose to pay $5, $20, $45 or $60. This model makes our production accessible to anyone and encourages audiences who might not regularly attend the Theatre to come & engage with a new kind of experience.
By using the Pay-What-You-Can-Afford system, we are taking a big financial risk. While the work becomes more financially accessible, our costs remain the same. Our work evolves as a communal process. We "write in the space" as an ensemble. This takes time and is very expensive but produces much more complex work. We have arts council funding for this project but it's not enough - we are so close! The $3,000 raised in this campaign will go to:
Funds to pay for artist fees and rental fees for an extra week of rehearsal. In creation, time and space are always what we need most and it's expensive.
Funds to bolster our marketing budget. These funds will allow us to hire a graphic designer and pay for advertising in print and digital media. An investment in marketing is an investment in growing our audience. In this sense your support now is an investment in our future as a companies.
Your Support Will:
- Help make art financially accessible, evolving our community’s relationship to payment structures with our “pay what you can afford” model.
- Help two of Toronto's leading theatre companies continue to grow, both in the depth of artistic research and in the scale of our audience.
Every Little Bit Counts!
