Flo Mask - A Two Year Journey

Our Story

The idea for Flo Mask started with the California Camp Fire wildfire in 2018. My kids were returning home from school sick from the toxic smoke that lasted two long weeks. It was then that I realized there weren't N95 level masks for kids.

I've been developing products for over 15 years (several award winning) and decided to make my own mask for kids because I knew I could make the very best in the world. I also recruited a few friends along the way to help (also award winning product designers) because they're the very best at what they do.

I persuaded a local tech company to let me rent their $25K 3D scanner device and started the project by scanning elementary aged kids to actually understand their face shape, down to 0.5mm of accuracy. I scanned Asian, Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic kids to ensure we had a good spectrum of data (accounting for nose bridge differences). Layering each scan on top of each other, aligning them at the tip of their lips, we proved my theory that there is in fact a one size fits all shape for kids 4-12. After many, many costly rounds of prototyping, I filed for patents with our final shape.

I also spent months researching filters, nearly giving up because of how hard it is for young kids to breathe through traditional filters (melt blown). Fortunately, I found the best air filtration material (spun bond) that is also incredibly breathable, made here in the USA. I've had the filters tested by Nelson Labs, results are that they block over 99.8% of viruses! This is the same type of filters used in hospital ventilators.

Dr. James Cisco, a renowned Stanford pediatrician, has followed along on my journey and gave us his endorsement after reviewing all the data I provided him. He also hooked up my 4 year old wearing Flo Mask to the oxygen meter and was convinced once it read 100% since this age group has weak lungs. 

It's been a long road with lots of sacrifices made to see this come to life. And to be fully transparent, this has been one of the hardest products I've ever worked on because so much depends on it being 100% perfect.

Flo Mask is needed now more than ever. 

It starts with the right fit.

Kids faces come in all shapes and sizes. That's why we used the very best 3D scanning technology to scan elementary aged kids across multiple ethnicities.

Layering this 3D data on top of each other, we were able to create a unique shape to our mask, optimized to fit kids as young as 4 and up to 12 years of age. (Patent Pending)

We then focused on comfort, both physical and respiratory.

Flo Mask was engineered with the latest advancements in manufacturing, using LSR (liquid silicone rubber) to create a pillowy gasket that contours along the face for a solid seal.

We designed Flo Mask with generous air flow openings, allowing those little lungs to breathe easily and comfortably through a pure filter layer.

Sub-micron filtration, even viruses.

Our medical grade filters are proudly made in the USA, filtering down to 0.1 micron. The electrostatically charged material captures harmful particulates from the air stream so your kids can breathe safely.

Nelson Labs tested our filters for viral and bacterial filtration efficiency (VFE & BFE).

Conclusion: Flo Mask filters block over 99.8% of viruses and 99.9% of bacteria.

Flo Mask filters are made using a needle punch non-woven textile that is electrostatically charged. This spunbond process makes breathability much better than standard meltblown filters.

Nelson Labs also tested our filters for breathability.

Conclusion: Flo Mask filters boast one of the lowest pressure resistance in the industry and performs over 600% better than FDA allowed standards, making it the ideal choice for kids.

But what about fabric masks?

Fabric masks are great for keeping kids from touching their mouths and noses. However, the weave of standard fabrics and lack of a good seal leave risk of microscopic viruses and air pollution passing through to the user. 

Flo Mask filters on the other hand, have been independently lab tested by Nelson Labs to block greater than 99.8% of viruses and 99.9% of bacteria, while remaining very breathable. Our tight seal ensures only filtered air passes into the user, and filtered air passes back out.
