Overview
A shocking portrait of one woman's fight against prejudice, grief, and loneliness starring Eileen Davies (Sightseers, The End of the F***ing World) alongside a talented all-female cast.

GLORIA is a 10 minute drama that follows an elderly widow as she becomes a prisoner in her own home after a selfish mother- Jane, and her teenage daughter- Ruby move in opposite her. Within the first few days of their arrival, the family began hosting parties each night- playing loud music until the early hours of the morning. After many sleepless nights, Gloria went over to their home and asked them to be quiet, but her complaints caused Ruby to select her as a perfect victim. In order to distract herself from the pain of watching her father inch closer to death in hospital, Rachel began playing a series of ever-worsening and cruel pranks on her defenceless neighbour.

After enduring months of abuse, Gloria reaches a breaking point after Ruby throws eggs at her windows and cause damage to her house. With her pleas for help ignored by the local council and her own daughter, Gloria tries to reason with the family, but her kindness only results in further punishment, and she slips into hopelessness.

However, when her own granddaughter becomes the next victim of Ruby's anger, Gloria realises she will need to take matters into her own hands and fight back in order to protect the things she loves most...

THE CRANWELL FAMILY

GLORIA

An ethereal, kind-hearted, independent woman- youthful beyond her years, but weighed down by a sadness that is ancient and crippling. Gloria has recently lost her husband of 40 years from cancer, and has struggled to accept her loss and fully grieve - instead choosing to fill her time with constant chores and gardening to distract from the heavy silence inside her home.

At her core, Gloria is filled with bitterness, regret, and grief at the way her life has turned out, and sees herself as weak and useless without her husband by her side. This pushes her to try to create happiness for others, as she does not want them to feel the loneliness and despair that she is currently enduring.

KATE

Kate is a stern single mother juggling work with raising her young daughter. Kate is still grieving over the loss of her father- since his death she has filled his absence with an obsession with work, and a new lover she has met there- and has ended up neglecting Amy and Gloria as a result.

AMY

A joyful tomboy. Amy loves reading, and role-playing the medieval fantasies inside her imagination. She loves her grandmother Gloria desperately, as she offers her wisdom and love that her mother doesn’t.

THE WALKER FAMILY

JANE

As a single mother balancing running a chaotic household with work, Jane is collapsing under the pressure as her ex husband grows progressively weaker in hospital. She is painfully aware of her daughter's emotional turmoil and frustrations, but has decided to leave her to her own devices while encouraging her reckless behaviour as a way for her to escape from the shock and heartbreak of losing her father.

RUBY

A rage-filled teenage girl who is desperate for any kind of attention, good or bad, to distract from the insecurities she hides deep inside and the lack of love from her mother. Too terrified to face the loss of her father, she has chosen to run away from her problems in the form of boys, alcohol, pranks, and games- using them as an easy and addictive way to bury her emotions and ignore the heartbreaking truth within her family.

We currently have two talented actresses locked down for the film, with more exciting announcements to come in the next few weeks.

EILEEN DAVIES - GLORIA

Previous credits: The End of the F***ing World, Sightseers, Mr Turner, Adult Life Skills, Prevenge, Mr Holmes, The Theory of Everything.

FIONA SKINNER - JANE

Previous credits: Taboo, Call The Midwife, A Royal Night Out, Our Girl, Doctors, Holby City.

"GLORIA is inspired by experiences I had growing up - from the ages of 7 to 10 I happened to live next door to the boy who was bullying me at school. This meant that the bullying followed me home every evening- and I felt powerless in response. I have always wanted to explore a similar story through film, as there is something particularly frightening and insidious about having your sense of safety destroyed in the very place where you should feel protected the most.

Although my experience happened to me at a young age, I was inspired to change the protagonist to an elderly woman, as the subject of bullying is a well-explored subject for young characters in film, but is woefully absent in stories about elderly people- the age group that is arguably the most vulnerable and affected by this issue the most, as many do not have friends or family to turn to for support. I also made this change as I feel it is important to have diversity in film, not just in terms of gender, ethnicity, and sexuality- but also age. With a wide variety ages being represented in this film, from Gloria entering her seventies, Jane and Kate on the cusp of middle-age, Ruby in the throes of adolescence, and Amy just starting school - we hope that the messages in the film will resonate with audiences of all ages.

The emotional centre of the film focuses on grief - and explores how it can damage and change a person beyond recognition - for better or for worse. Every character in the story has been affected by this pain in some way, but for Gloria and Ruby it has rocked them to their very core. Although their experiences are similar, they are complete opposites in terms of how they have chosen to respond to them - with Gloria nurturing the people around her, while Ruby lashes out and destroys everything in her sight. Their relationship and conflict is at the heart of this story - and leads us to a shocking conclusion..."

The majority of films featuring an ageing protagonist are depressing and tragic - however we want GLORIA to be a battle cry that shows the hidden strength that comes with age, while also shining a light on the silent but pervasive issue of loneliness and bullying that is currently affecting a large percentage of elderly people in the UK. Gloria’s problems arise and are exacerbated by the fact that no-one listens to her due to her age - as Ruby assumes that she is weak and targets her because of this - and over time, Gloria even begins to believe this herself, and at the start of the film, we join her in a state of complete despair. However, throughout the story Gloria soon begins to re-discover her own personal strength - before making a final choice to reclaim her own self-respect and power. We hope that her journey will be emotional and inspiring for all audiences to experience.

The visual style will take influence from Mommy, Fish Tank, Tyrannosaur, This Is England, Dead Man’s Shoes, The Lonely Giant, The Levelling, American Honey, Carol, and Her. The majority of film will be shot on shoulder rig in typical social realist style, apart from the scenes that take place within Gloria’s home- which will be static, exacerbating the suffocating silence and stillness that fills each room.

Despite the emptiness inside, Gloria’s home is her sanctuary- and we want this to be reflected in a warm yellow colour palette that fills her home- faded yellow floral wallpaper, yellow net curtains, and yellow cushions. The flowers that she plants in her garden will also be yellow, to symbolically show how she is trying to nurture her own happiness, but her efforts only end up being cruelly destroyed by the outside world and the people that occupy it. The world outside Gloria’s home and the Hart house opposite will be full of greys against an empty blue sky, with no natural beauty. This is to subconsciously show how Gloria is at odds with them, and how there is seemingly no place for her beyond her home, while also creating an uncomfortable, cold feeling in the audience whenever a scene moves outside.

The opening and ending scenes will be dreamlike, shot in slow motion on a Ronin to add to the surreal and shocking nature of the action on-screen. This will also give the impression of the film being cyclical- the classical music that will play throughout the beginning and end represent Gloria’s peace of mind and happiness. In the first scene, it is abruptly cut short by Ruby’s actions, whereas in the final few scenes the music plays again and doesn’t stop until the credits have ended - showing how these important feelings have returned for Gloria and now cannot be broken.

We are a collection of film production students from the Arts University Bournemouth, and like many students we barely have enough money to feed ourselves, let alone create an ambitious film! Although we are putting our own money into this project, hosting events, asking favours, and cutting down on any expenses where possible, we still need to raise £2000 at a minimum in order for us to be able to bring our vision to life. If you have read our ideas and resonate with the story we are going to create, then we hope you would be able to help us- whether that takes the form of being kind enough to donate £1, £100, or a quick share on Facebook.
