The Breakdown:
We are Therese Barbato and Mary Wiseman, both second year students at the Juilliard School and huge fans of the play God's Ear by Jenny Schwartz. The impetus for this project was our mutual love of the play and our desire to share it with a broader community.
God's Ear is the story of a young family trying deperately to recover after the loss of their eight year-old son. Ms. Schwartz uses heightened and stylized text to illuminate how paltry language is in the face of unspeakable grief.
Nina Steiger, director of the Writer's Center at Soho Theatre, London said of God's Ear:
"The play presents a mosaic; each of it's tiles offer grace notes of misunderstanding, odd applications of every day idioms, overturned cliches, and phantom lines from one character in the mouth of another. What emerges from the fragments is a compelling portrait of grief and recalibration. It's a perfect snapshot of a family in transition and it articulates aspects of the human heart and the modern condition.
God's Ear is directed by Lee Sunday Evans and stars: Noah Averbach-Katz, Therese Barbato, Alex Breaux, Brandon Hall, Vella Lovell, Mallory Portnoy, and Mary Wiseman
