Overview
GRRL HAUS CINEMA is an ongoing program of short films and video art made by women. A mix of local, national, and international artists present work from a variety of disciplines: narrative, documentary, experimental, and conceptual. With an emphasis on low budget and DIY, GRRL HAUS is a space for underrepresented voices in the arts today.

I initiated GRRL HAUS in the winter of 2014 to screen my films and friends’ films. We were making short films on a low budget (or no budget) while working or going to school, and GRRL HAUS became our approach to celebrate our real passions and to showcase all the hard work we had put into our works of art. The reality is that the film scene was (and still is) dominated by male voices, and yet I was surrounded by all these incredible women filmmakers who were not being exposed and acclaimed in the way that they deserved. Although many of us didn't have the equipment and financial backing that many of our male counterparts had, we were somehow making something out of nothing. We developed a united DIY spirit out of necessity, but as we oversaw our own projects, we collectively embraced the freedom to not compromise our visions. What initially began as a way to screen and promote my films and my friends’ films has now expanded into international events that celebrate and honor the work of women filmmakers. Artists who have shown in GRRL HAUS are at all levels and points in their careers, from filmmakers who have shown at major festivals to first time student filmmakers.

There is an impetus and motivation for GRRL HAUS to continue to grow its community of artists in a supportive environment to help us gain strengths as artists together.  This is really a project done out of love of art, cinema and to promote the talent of underrepresented women in the arts. Our most recent event was in Berlin and included 11 filmmakers, 8 short films and a musical performance at the end of the screening. The films selected were from previous events screened in the US with the addition of a selection of local Berlin based films.

I am currently doing most of work for GRRL HAUS. One of my main goals for the future of GRRL HAUS is to increase submissions from around the world to represent diversity in all its forms and encourage more underrepresented voices of women to be heard. Achieving this goal requires more people to help with outreach and promotion.

For the past few events, I’ve have had volunteers and interns to help with the screenings. For the future, I would like to hire a crew to help with the events, because GRRL HAUS is expanding and attracting more and more entries from around the world. As an artist myself (and as a woman), I know first-hand how it feels to not be compensated adequately for hard work, and I also know that women are chronically underpaid and undervalued. I feel that it is important to be able to compensate all my interns many of whom are studying film and/or beginning their own careers as filmmakers. These individuals assist in acquiring and viewing submissions, help with press releases and promotion, locate potential venues, contact/contract vendors and musicians for events as well as offer overall assistance with setting up the theater. Other needs are hiring a designer to help with all the promotional materials and hiring a social media intern to assist with outreach.

Additional costs are in the promotion of the events, postcards, posters, flyers, pins, stickers, programs etc. as well as the production of merchandise such as t-shirts and bags, and as we expand to events in Europe and other countries, the costs of rental spaces/theaters.

The goal is to make GRRL HAUS self-sustaining, and my hope is that by hiring and getting more people involved in the administrative side of things we will find a way to make it a self-sustaining bi-or triannual festival, all while keeping the DIY spirit alive.

The next scheduled GRRL HAUS event will be taking place at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Dec. 18, 2017, and we will be accepting submissions from Sept 8th to Nov. 15th. If you are interested in submitting, look here: https://filmfreeway.com/festival/GRRLHAUSCINEMA

The only qualifier to submit to GRRL HAUS is that the short film must have been made by a woman and be no longer than 20 minutes, other than that the films can be about anything of the film-maker’s choosing.
