Hands Free Back Wash
Taking a hot shower feels fantastic. You can’t help but feel more relaxed when you get out. But for the disabled and the elderly, getting clean in the shower can be a challenge.
I’ve seen the need for a Hands Free Back Wash throughout my 24-year career as a registered nurse. Then last year, it hit closer to home when my oldest daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She called me in a panic one morning when she wasn’t able to lift her arms.
Throughout most of our lives, a shower is a private experience. It’s easy to become depressed when we need help to do what seems so simple. The Hands Free Back Wash allows everyone to maintain their dignity, while also turning a simple shower into a spa-like experience.
Each unit attaches to a shower with industrial-grade suction cups. The front has three rotating silicone brushes that dispense soap. It has a reservoir that holds 16 oz. or more of body wash, so you won’t need to refill it often. The brushes follow three vertical tracks that use motors to move them up and down, enhancing their therapeutic effect of reducing strains, muscle soreness and improving circulation.
And depending on your preferences, the brush heads can be switched for other styles that, for example, may be designed more for scrubbing or massaging (and different speeds such as low, medium or high).
The motors that spin the brushes are powered by a rechargeable battery unit with a sealed compartment that can easily be accessed without removing the device from the wall.
After pressing a button to start the scrubbing action and selecting the brush speed you prefer, all that’s required is to press your back against the Hands Free Back Wash so it can work its magic!
EVERYONE can benefit from a Hands Free Back Wash! It is extremely beneficial for anyone with upper extremity limitations, including people managing the following conditions: Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, sciatica, herniated disks, any degenerative disk disease, stroke, heart attack, tendinitis, rotator cuff injuries, severe back acne due to profuse sweating, and people with physical disabilities. Many veterans who return from war zones with injuries also want to maintain their independence, which makes the Hands Free Back Wash a good solution for them, too.
If you look at the conditions listed above, many people are not able to reach their backs and apply the pressure needed to clean them with a sponge or loofah, even when they’re attached to a handle. Another problem with these tools is they can spread bacteria. Few people disinfect them after each use, which means they are breeding grounds for germs. When you shower, the steam causes the pores in your skin to open. Rubbing a bacteria-filled loofah on your back increases your chances of getting an infection.
No matter what age you are, we all want to be independent. After a lifetime of doing things on our own, no one wants a nurse or family member assisting them in the shower. And I think we can all agree, we don’t want strangers looking at us in the shower, either. Staying independent reduces depression and keeps us from feeling helpless or like we’re a burden on others.
It seems like no shower ever made has enough shelving to hold all of our soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, detangler and everything else that needs a space. A lot of people rely on shower caddies that hang from the shower head, but they often slip off causing bottles to fall and even injuries. They also place stress on the show head, which can cause leaks to start. A better solution is to just pour your favorite body wash into the Hands Free Back Wash reservoir and let the scrubbers clean and massage your back.
The traditional way to clean your back in the shower relies on applying soap to a washcloth, then awkwardly reaching around your sides and shoulders to scrub your back. Even for the most flexible among us, it’s not an easy task. It’s even more annoying when you forget your washcloth and don’t remember until you’re already under the water.
Now think about this scenario: You get in the shower, then push the button on the Hands Free Back Wash to make the scrubbers start to spin. The scent of your favorite body wash immediately fills the shower as it starts being released. You then lean your back harder and softer against the bristles to get your back clean and massaged at the same time. If you have any muscle soreness, you can lean a little harder in those spots to work out the tension.
It’s a much better experience than trying to guess which fingers can reach the center of your back—and it’s the only way if you have mobility problems.
Each unit relies on industrial-grade suction cups to keep it attached to the wall of a shower. Before installing it, be sure to first clean where it will be placed. This ensures you get the best grip, since dried soap deposits can cause problems. Next, stand in the shower barefoot and hold the device so that the bottom is just above your belly button. That’s about the right height for most people, but it’s possible you may like yours a little higher. Then, make the suction cups damp with some water and press the device against the wall of the shower.
You’ll receive illustrated instructions for installation and usage, the complete Hands Free Back Wash device, 3 silicone scrubbers, one rechargeable battery, and my deepest gratitude for your support.
I started the process of making the Hands Free Back Wash in October 2018. Since then, I started the preliminary patent research and independent research to see if there were any other products like it on the market—there aren’t. I also had a design firm create full schematics for the device, including renderings of its shape, the motor design, suction cups, and the silicone brushes.
Everything is ready for the first units to be made, but I need funding to pay for manufacturing, packaging and shipping.
Based on the costs to move this from a design to customer doors, the retail price will be $199.95. I’m offering Indiegogo supporters 15% off the retail price, which is a savings of $29.99, for a total discounted price here of $169.95.
Anyone who purchases two products will get 25% off the retail price, for a savings of $49.99 on each unit.
Risks and challenges
Even though a few prototypes have been created to make sure the product works as intended, I don’t have any data yet for how long it will last with different sized people using it daily. This makes Indiegogo the perfect place to bring the Hands Free Back Wash to market. The data I can collect from early adopters will help me revise the design to ensure it’s the best way to wash your back on the market.
