What is Havana Love Letters?

  • Havana Love Letters is a new ballet with an original score, and the first collaboration between Cuba’s Institute of the Arts (the famed El ISA)  and a team of artists from the U.S.
  • Havana Love Letters  brings Cuban dancers together with choreographer Suki John, composer Joel Diamond, scenic designer Brian Clinnin and costume designer Murell Horton.
  • In June 2016, Havana Love Letters will workshop at Cuba's Teatro Bertolt Brecht as part of the Festival of the Arts.

Havana Love Letters is actively developing cultural relations between the US and Cuba!

  • Help us extend an olive branch through dance, one of the most basic forms of human communication!
  • The production process will be filmed and photographed, so this historic collaboration can be shared on the screen as well as the stage. Once the ballet has been developed, it will be available for professional companies in Cuba and the U.S.

Magnitude of This Collaboration

  • A project of this size and scope builds cooperation between our two peoples, who have been kept apart for far too long.
  • Dance goes far beyond the spoken word, communicating across language and distance. Havana Love Letters - or Cartas de Amor as it is titled in Cuba - creates a bridge across time and cultures.

Our Funding Goals

  • Our goal is to raise $10,000 with this platform. The funds raised here will pay for transportation, housing for our team, costumes and set elements.
  • Meeting this goal guarantees that Cuban drivers, translators and filmmakers who are not paid by El ISA will be compensated fairly for their work on the project.

Inspirations

  • Havana Love Letters is inspired by Havana itself, by Cuban dancers and musicians, by poet Nicolas Guillén, painter Wilfredo Lam, and author Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Joel Diamond and Suki John have created six ballets together with Cuban dance companies such as Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Danza Contemporánea, Narciso Medina, and Danza Espiral.

Risks & Challenges

  • As diplomacy and international developments ebb and flow between the US and Cuba, this project offers an exciting opportunity to establish enduring cultural exchange through one of Cuba's favorite art forms: dance.
  • As of now, there is still no government funding for artistic projects in Cuba -- so WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Ways You Can Help

  • No gift is too small!
  • By supporting this cause you are actively helping develop cultural relations between the US and Cuba.

If you are unable to contribute, we encourage you to make some noise on social media about this campaign and use the IndieGoGo share tools to help us spread the word!
