positions over his career.

For the Curious Minds - What's Under the Hood
Below is a peak under the hood of our smart
connected products. We would love to have a one on one conversation about all
the technical “fun” we've had over the past two years bringing these smart
products to market. The smart home revolution is upon us and we'd like to
connect with all the brainiacs and tech gurus out there interested in working
with us to expand our IOT ecosystem.
IoT Framework:
We are using the open source IOT framework AllJoyn from Allseen Alliance to IOT enable our smart products. AllJoyn utilizes a client server architecture to communicate with devices and allows simplified interoperability between connected products and applications. Heaven Fresh products are AllJoyn Certified, meaning they comply with interoperability standards and should seamlessly interoperate with other certified AllJoyn products out of the box. Heaven Fresh is a member of the Allseen Alliance. We are working closely with other member companies to continuously improve the open source framework. Firmware
Our products utilize the AllJoyn thin client 15.09 running on NXP's MQX 4.1 RTOS. We have implemented the onboarding and configuration Alljoyn frameworks along with a custom control panel framework. For AWS IOT cloud services we are utilizing a Paho MQTT client along with WolfSSL SSL stack for enabling TLS 1.2 secured connection. Device firmware updates are done over the air (OTA) through MQX flash swap.
Mobile Apps
All our mobile apps are native apps for their respective operating systems i.e. iOS, Android and Windows 10. These apps use the AllJoyn standard client and house the AllJoyn router. Our apps leverage the onboarding, configuration and a custom control panel AllJoyn framework. Our apps can discover other AllJoyn products connected to the same network allowing interoperability among other AllJoyn products. Our apps have two modes, local and cloud. Local mode allows our app to exchange AllJoyn messages directly to the device without the need of connecting to the cloud. Cloud mode is specifically used when away from your home network and relies on MQTT communication to AWS IOT cloud services to talk with your device.
Cloud Service
After reviewing countless cloud options, we chose to go with AWS IOT cloud. We will probably write a lengthy white paper on the cloud selection process but the key factors were:
1) Flexibility in options and services allowing us to build the service we want.
2) Designed for embedded and low power devices.
3) Technical support via cloud architects and developer forums.
4) Cost of the cloud services from a consumer product perspective.
AWS ticked all these boxes with their fantastic cloud services such as DynamoDB for databases, Lambda for compute services not to mention Kinesis, Identity Management, SES and EC2 all exposed to AWS IOT, bridging our smart products to the AWS cloud. AWS IOT ThingSDK provides simple wrappers for and MQTT client and TLS networking functions along with simple API for communicating with the AWS device shadow, all of this is wrapped into a small 16KB package.
Security
We take user and device security very seriously. Security is built into the AllJoyn framework that allows for point to point encryption using KEYX and PSK where AllJoyn applications hold keys to decrypt data. An enhancement to the existing security was also developed and is called Security 2.0. This allows an application to validate access to interfaces and objects based on policies installed by the owner. When our smart products or app connect to the AWS IOT cloud services they utilize TLSv1.2 with mutual authentication using ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 cipher suite. Device certificate generation is done within your local network meaning your devices private key is never transmitted over then internet.
Interoperability
Interoperability is the holy grail of the IoT (Internet of Things). Several industry groups as well as Apple and Google are trying to be the communication standard for the Internet connected devices. We have started with AllJoyn but we are also working in parallel to achieve interoperability with other devices/framework that do not speak AllJoyn (yet).
