Hello! I’m Toni Kennedy, the creator of What’s Poppin’ Penny?, a beloved children’s podcast inspired by my multigenerational home with my granddaughter and her mother. This project has blossomed into something special, and I’m excited to take it to the next level by bringing Penny’s world to life through animation and a 10-book series. Your contributions will help us support young artists from Discovery Animation Studio Hub as they create magical content for YouTube and beyond. Meet Penny and Her Magical Family!
At the heart of What's Poppin' Penny? is Penny—a bright, adventurous preschooler growing up in a cozy, multi-generational family in the big city. Penny's days are filled with boundless curiosity and new discoveries, and she knows she can always count on her family to guide her with love, wisdom, and a healthy dose of fun!
When Penny holds her enchanted teddy bear, T.A. (Theodore 'Teddy' Allen, who is also her Trusted Adult), and recites a special poem, he transforms into a towering guardian, full of the same warmth, humor, and spontaneity that Penny’s maternal grandfather had. With T.A. by her side, every adventure is an opportunity to learn and laugh, and their bond is as magical as it is heartwarming.
Then there’s Penelepaw, the family’s clever, chatty cat, who only Penny and T.A. can understand. She brings her own quirky energy to each adventure, often tagging along with quick wit and charm.
Penny’s parents, Zoe and Jabari, add their own brand of love and light. Zoe is a talented artist and warm-hearted mom who knows how to set healthy boundaries, and Jabari is the king of dad jokes, a wonderful cook, and a supportive partner. Together, they create a loving, balanced environment where Penny can thrive.
And just downstairs lives Spicy—Penny’s fabulous grandma. Retired from teaching but a lifelong learner, Spicy always has a kind word, a bit of wisdom, and an adventurous spirit of her own. Her love and guidance make her the ultimate glam-ma.
