Thank you.

With your help, Khan Academy has reached our goal of raising $300,000 to create world-class Government and Politics resources for high school students. On top of that, we raised an additional $200,000 to fund Social Studies content for middle schoolers. And on top of that, we raised an additional $68,341, which we’ll use to expand our content library to include more new topics. That’s incredible! We couldn’t be more excited and encouraged by the 12,735 supporters who helped us reach these milestones. Together, we’ve raised funds to help us bring free resources on these critical topics to millions of learners. We truly couldn't have done it without you.

Education by the people, for the people

Through July 28th, Khan Academy is asking for your help to fund Social Studies lessons for middle school students. We’ve already met our goal of $300,000 to create engaging lessons on the intricacies of US government and politics for high school students, and now we want to bring that same approach to this critical subject for younger students. These lessons, like everything Khan Academy creates, will be free for everyone, but we need your help to fund their creation.

The Project

Khan Academy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit on a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We believe that students of all ages should have free, unlimited access to the best educational content and that they should be able to consume and master this content at their own pace. Our content library at www.khanacademy.org and on our YouTube channel covers a wide range of topics, from kindergarten to early college. We have over 40 million registered students and have delivered over 700 million lessons and 6 billion exercise problems.

Now we want to expand our coverage to include US government and politics. The 2016 presidential election has dominated the news, and people of all ages have so many questions about it. What’s the difference between a primary and a caucus? How does the electoral college work? And what exactly does the president have the power to do? Khan Academy is a non-partisan resource where anyone can come to have those questions answered.

The life of every American has been shaped by the laws and amendments to the Constitution, by major Supreme Court decisions, and by state and federal bureaucracies, but many people don’t understand how. The US government & politics series on Khan Academy will explain the articles and clauses of the Constitution in a simple, approachable way. And we’ll also delve into how our main institutions of national government were created, how the three branches of government balance one another, how our political parties began, the role of the mass media in our democracy, systems of public policy, and civil rights.

We want learners everywhere to develop the same love and passion that we have for evidence-based debate and critical thinking around the founding principles, institutions and policies of the United States. Join us in shaping the future of our democracy through an informed and empowered electorate.

A personalized learning resource for all ages

Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

From humble beginnings to a world-class team

What started as one man tutoring his cousin has grown into a 100-person organization. We’re a diverse team that has come together to work on an audacious mission: to provide a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We are developers, teachers, designers, strategists, scientists, and content specialists who passionately believe in inspiring the world to learn. A few great people can make a big difference.

What you'll be supporting

We hope to raise $300,000 by July 28th to get the US government & politics collection started and begin creating content – videos, articles and quizzes – geared to high school students. We want to cover the most important topics that are taught in US government & politics courses, like the balance of power in the US national government, how our political parties began and how elections work. Then we’ll move on to videos on topics like the evolution of domestic policies in America, the growth of special interest groups, and the role of the media in the political process. The content you'll be supporting will also be aligned to the AP US Government and Politics curriculum, so any student preparing for the exam can reference this series to get a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the course.

The Executive Branch

Why does the US have a president? What powers were allotted to the president in the Constitution, and how have presidential powers expanded over time? What exactly does the Vice President do?

The Legislative Branch

Why did the framers of the Constitution choose a congress over other forms of representative government, such as a parliament? How does Congress choose its leaders? What are committees, and why are they so powerful?

The Judicial Branch

What did the framers think of the powers of the Supreme Court? Does federal law always override state laws? Why aren’t federal judges elected? Has the US ever had an 8-member Supreme Court before now, and how did they make rulings?

The Constitution

What was the source of debate between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists? Why did some states insist on creating a Bill of Rights? What different national, state and local powers are enumerated under the Constitution? How has the relationship between the federal and state governments evolved?

Elections

What are the differences between primaries and caucuses? How does the Electoral College work? Why is voter turnout so low? How did the framers feel about political parties? How did our current two-party system originate? Why has the cost of running for office gotten so high? How has the role of the media impacted the political process?

Civil Rights & Civil Liberties

What are the differences between civil liberties and civil rights? How and why has the Constitution been amended throughout US history? How have federal judges interpreted civil rights and liberties and how have those decisions changed all of our lives? How have voting rights evolved for different groups over time?

We love creating this content, and your contribution will help us devote staff and resources to it and fill in Khan Academy’s gaps in social studies and the humanities. You’ll also be supporting the millions of Khan Academy learners who come to our free website and YouTube channel every day for clear, concise explanations of complex subjects.

So, before you head out to buy your Fourth of July fireworks, please make a contribution to help us create amazing content about our government and politics, and get more people engaged with the political system.

How Khan Academy is helping

Here are the stories of some of the 40 million registered students that Khan Academy has helped to master content and succeed.

Sal Khan, sir, you are totally my hero. Ever since kindergarten I had been really excited at the prospect of studying physics. But when I did begin to study pure physics, I realized that my teachers and I had completely different ideas about how the subject should be taught. The intuition-oriented teaching I looked for was not to be found in my school and I used to stay with my doubts for hours without anyone to go to. But once I began watching your lectures and had my bizarrely abstract questions answered, I realized that I was not dumb to be curious after all. You didn't only teach me Physics, you restored my faith in myself for which I can never be grateful enough. You are the best!

My name is Laurel and I started khan a while ago and it has rely been helping me because. I'm not that good at division and with khan it takes me step by step and it helps me go through it. Khan has challenged me because I was not all ways getting my multiplication or division right all the time at school. My school does khan academy too. We all practice on khan academy when we go to the computer lab. So on khan it will help me through my multiplication and division and it makes it fun and easy at the same time. I LOVE KHAN ACADEMY!!!!!

I attended college shortly after high school in 2005, [but] found myself struggling and failing classes. I decided to join the military, then worked in a warehouse shortly after that. I came across Khan Academy and used it to hone my math skills to do inventory management. I realized how much I had not learned correctly over the years, and Khan Academy inspired me to get back into college. I left my warehouse job and enrolled in my old university under the Computer Engineering program. I took on Calculus 2 and several other tough courses. I passed that semester with a 4.0. Thanks to Khan Academy, I was able to get my life back on track, my grades up, and my mind sharper. I am thankful that Khan Academy is provided for free, and I will continue to donate monthly to ensure that others will have the opportunity that I did.

Khan Academy in the News

One Man, One Computer, 10 Million Students: How Khan Academy Is Reinventing Education

"The site covers a staggering array of topics–from basic arithmetic and algebra to the electoral college and the French Revolution. The videos are quirky affairs where you never see the instructor. Instead, students are confronted with a blank digital blackboard, which, over the course of a ten-minute lesson narrated in Khan’s soothing baritone, is gradually filled up with neon-colored scrawls illustrating key concepts. The intended effect is working through homework at the kitchen table with your favorite uncle looking over your shoulder."

Can Khan Academy’s Free SAT Prep Level the Playing Field?

“It’s a radically democratic reboot of the test-prep industry, which up until now reserved its advantages for the relatively well-heeled who could afford their pricey tutorials.”

Sultana is a young woman in Afghanistan who lost access to education at the age of 11 after receiving threats of acid burnings if she continued to go to school. She primarily used Khan Academy to teach herself since then. We're proud that she was profiled by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times.
