Be A Part of History!!In 1938, Bill Monroe and Cleo Davis pulled a camper trailer from Atlanta to Asheville to take over the 15 minute radio show called 'Mountain Music Time' at WWNC in the Flat Iron Building in Downtown Asheville. He then named the group 'Bill Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys', coining the term "Bluegrass" as his distinct new music style that was ready to set the world on fire!
For more on the legacy of Cleo Davis and those early days of Asheville Music check out Wayne Erbsen's interview with Cleo here:
http://nativeground.com/cleo-davis-the-original... WNCmusic.Org wants to give you the opportunity to help us commemorate "the first time the world heard Bluegrass Music" as Bill himself said. The state of North Carolina only considers applications for historical markers 25 years after the honoree has passed, which would be 2021 for Bill Monroe. We believe his legacy should be honored now.
What We Need
We have permission to install a historical marker at the front entrance of the Flat Iron Building. We estimate that $6000 will be needed to complete the creation, shipping, and installation of the brass marker. Anything extra that is raised will be put into developing 'Bill Monroe Day' as a world class event that Bill Monroe himself would be proud of...so please be generous (because you know the pressure is on to perform to the highest standard)!!
For your contribution we will be able to offer tickets to Bill Monroe Day 2014 - Asheville, NC (TBA)
You will be recognized throughout our social media and videos from the ceremony and celebration.
We will advertise your business if you desire to be more involved in the process and give in a more direct way to this effort.
The Impact
We are working to ensure the legacy of Bill Monroe and the impact his music has had on the world is preserved well into the 21st Century. It's important that Asheville has a public reminder of the impact Bill Monroe and Bluegrass Music has had here. Your contribution will go directly to enhancing that effort.
