What is the concept of the book?
The book is not just an accidental selection of generic photographs from a road-trip in the US. From the very beginning I wanted to combine two different lines in the story – America and my friend H. I also must confess inspiration from the fabulous books – "Americans“ by Robert Frank and "A Period of Juvenile Prosperity“ by Mike Brodie.

I deliberately blended a conceptual idea with the bold visual of warm Kodak films along with short poems. You might find disturbing disclosures in the poems and might experience emotions which you may not have uncovered with the photographs alone. You might find this book is not about the trip around the US...

I used only film cameras – I aimed the old 6x6 Rolleiflex Standard at the drivers who gave us a ride or the people who let us stay overnight in their homes and my interaction with H. featured snapshot photography utilizing flash, close-ups, out of focus and night shots on the 35 mm camera.

The concept and design of the book arose after numerous discussions with Petr Mazoch (graphic designer) and my lecturers from the Institute of Creative Photography (ICP) at Silesian University in Czech Republic.

The mock-up of the book was declared one of the best in the academic year (in ICP). Later it was exhibited during the Prague Photography Fair and the Bratislava Month of Photography. Selected photographs were published in Cilichili and FOTO magazine.

The total cost of the book reaches up to £6000 with most funds coming directly from myself and my family. The book was also financially supported by a grant of £1250 from the State Cultural Fund of the Czech Republic.

I have worked hard to save money to bring my book to be published. But this is still not enough, I would need additional £1300 to cover all bills (scanning, retouching, graphic design, translation and printing). However, the more money I can raise the more I can focus on finishing my studies and other projects from BFLMPVSZ Publishing.

It is almost done! The book is ready to print and will be finished within the next couple of weeks. I will keep you updated on the progress from meeting the printer, seeing the book in the middle of the manufacturing to viewing the final result. You will also be invited to the book launch in Prague and London. I will specify the venue and date later.

I am an Environmental engineering graduate and I work as an acoustic engineer. However since my childhood I have always had a strong passion for photography. I started off in the darkroom at the age of 8. Later I established the photography magazine Temnokomornik which I have been successfully publishing for two years. Then I enrolled at the Silesian University to study photography and in 2014 I decided to set up my own publishing platform – BFLMPSVZ. I´m currently spanned between Czech Republic and London. Kniha není jen výběr známých a kýčovitých fotografií z USA. Od začátku jsem věděl, že se chci zaměřit na dvě linky – na Američany samotné a na H., moji nejlepší kamarádku. Taky přiznávám inspiraci beatnickou generací a knihama „On the Road" od Kerouaca, „Americans“ od Roberta Franka nebo „A Period of Juvenile Prosperity“ od Mikea Brodieho.

Možná oceníte příjemnou teplou tonalitu prošlých Kodak filmů, syrové snapshoty H. nebo konceptuální portréty na střední formát. Možná oceníte vědomou práci s médiem fotografie v kontextu vložených básní a grafického designu knihy. Možná zjistíte, že Hitchhike US není o cestování po USA...

Fotografoval jsem výhradně na film, starý Rollefilex Standart z roku 1932 jsem namířil na Američany a kinofilm na H. Neostrý a přepálený fotky nejsou chyba ani náhoda, je to tak dobře.

Knihu jsem připravil ve spolupráci s grafickým designérem Petrem Mazochem a pedagogy Institutu tvůrčí fotografie v Opavě, jmenovitě Jindřich Štreit, Otakar Karlas, Rafal Milach, Tomáš Pospěch a další. Kromě fotografií v knize najdete tři menší složky s básněmi v češtině i angličtině.

Maketa knihy byla vystavena v rámci prezentace ITF na Prague Photo a Off Festivalu Měsíce fotografie v Bratislavě. Menší část projektu byla otištěna v časopisech Čilichili a FOTO.

Knihu si vydávám sám pod hlavičkou svého nakladatelství BFLMPSVZ, takže si většinu knihy platím sám. Celkové náklady na knihu se pohybují kolem 200 000,- Kč. Nicméně mám radost, že projekt uspěl v grantovém řízení a získal podporu Státního fondu kultury ve výši 45 000,- Kč.

Tvrdě pracuju, abych uhradil všechny závazky, ale to taky znamená výrazně méně času na další projekty a dokončení studia na ITF. Proto Indiegogo a kampaň na dalších 45 tis. Kč, což je zhruba £1300. Proč je projekt právě v librách? Protože české crowdfundingové platformy nenabízejí takové možnosti jako Indiegogo a to zase nenabízí českou korunu... Ale především chci oslovit veřejnost i za hranicemi ČR. Přispět můžete jednoduše platbou běžnou kartou, kdy se libry přepočtou na koruny podle přibližného kurzu 34,5 Kč/GPD.

Už je skoro hotovo! Jenom to vytisknout a během pár týdnů bude doma. Tím chci říct, že tisknout se bude určitě a vy budete u toho! Poznáte hlavního tiskaře, nahlídnete do prostor tiskárny a uvidíte, jak vypadá kniha uprostřed procesu výroby. Až bude hotovo, bouchneme šampáňo na křtu v Praze a potom taky v Londýně, podrobnosti se včas dozvíte, sledujte Facebook!

Vystudoval jsem techniku prostředí a živím se technickou akustikou. Nicméně zvětšovat v temné komoře a fotit blbosti jsem začal asi v osmi letech. Později jsem založil fotografický časopis Temnokomorník a ještě později začal studovat fotografii na Institutu tvůrčí fotografie v Opavě. V roce 2014 se vrátila vášeň pro vydávání, a proto vzniklo BFLMPVZ. Zatím jsme vydali dva ziny – Mju.name a Hchkrdtn14 a na dalším se pracuje.
