Mária Takács’s film is one of the first documentaries about the gay community in Central and Eastern Europe. It investigates how Hungarian society and the government have treated gay people, and the changes in their personal experiences of social and political oppression from the communist era to contemporary times. The film lets you explore the rich micro-histories of these communities and how one’s self-understanding and solidarity can mitigate the effects of state-driven homophobia.

The Story
Four young gay guys uncover the silenced part of Hungary’s Communist past and reinterpret it from the vantage point of the current nationalist turn. They visit seven “elders”, excavate their secret service files, and re-experience some of the crucial life events of an older Hungarian gay generation.
“The most important reason why I participated in the movie is that through it I wanted to leave a mark for posterity.” - Balázs Pálfi, gay activist, protagonist of the older generation
“In their engaging manner, they told us tales about how they first met, and, of course, about events in the many years that have passed since then.” - Milán Banach Nagy, initiator of the film, protagonist of the younger generation
Why We Need YOUR Support?
Our dream is to make a 90-minute long creative documentary, full of situations and recreated scenes, where the stories told by the characters come alive.
The political environment in Hungary is currently unfriendly towards gay-themed documentaries. We have not received any government support so we have to find alternative resources to finance the film. Aside from some film grants, we need YOUR help to realize the movie.
Thanks to your previous donations, we have reconstructed some key events of the older generation’s lives.

Now we are asking for your help again so that we can finish the post-production:
- for excavating and researching files in the archives
- editorial costs
- the rental of technical equipment
- communication costs
Your support will give us the chance to make our dream come true!
The People in and behind the Movie
The Cast
The idea of the film was conceived by Milán, who became one of the young protagonists of the documentary. Milán lives in a committed relationship and would like to have children with his partner in spite of the limited possibilities they have. He and Michel, the closeted cameraman of the film are running a video blog about LGBT+ issues, events, and activism.

Milán and the other young protagonists: Gábor, Péter and our "hidden cameraman" – apart from being a ballet dancer, an anthropologist, a historian, and a psychologist by training – are activists of a new generation whose approach is sometimes difficult to understand for the elders. The protagonists of the older generation are pioneers of the gay movement, drag queens of the early gay bars, entrepreneurs and ordinary people who all happened to be gay in dark times. Despite all the generational differences, these men also discovered that they have a lot in common. The film not only helped them to get to know one another but also themselves.
