Can we all be superstars as well? - 3 billion souls, 2026. A Wednesday.
About the Film:
In her late twenties, Max finds herself struggling with a life of existential uncertainty, the success of everyone around her - including her best friend Emma - and the terrifying realisation that her mental state is starting to fracture.
In The Meantime is a feature length film that explores friendship, isolation, failure, happiness and the cavalcade of social interactions that happen in our day to day lives. As Max attempts to figure out what on earth she's actually doing with her existence, we meet people that we identify with and characters that immediately remind us of friends we know. This is a story that people will feel like is their story.
For all that’s happened over the last few years, the themes within the film maintain a timely and universal nature. In The Meantime explores the way our memory tries to make sense of - and shield us from - the struggles we go through. We want people to believe in this story. To help create a film that can find itself on the cinematic landscape in Australia. To show Melbourne in a new light. Bring the city to life and breathe into the heart of those that call it home.
This story is not from the mind of just one person, and it is better for it. Creatives from all walks of life have contributed to the development and making of the film, allowing it to become a project that champions female creatives, and people who identify as queer and non-binary. We have fought for there to be people of colour in pivotal roles, and the film has been guided by a female-identifying producer and script consultant. We’re telling a story about real people, and for that reason our creative team has been heavily made up of those people who can breathe life into the characters. Creatives have had autonomy over the final developing stages of their characters, and for that reason this film has been a hugely collaborative project.
The style and tone of the film is inspired by French New Wave and the American Indie Movement of the late 80's and early 90's as well as more modern films and series that explore female friendship and the struggles of mental health. Think films like Breathless, Frances Ha, Girlfriends, My Life to Live, Cleo from 5 to 7, Tangerine, Columbus, Stranger Than Paradise, Paterson, Manhattan, and shows like Broad City, Feel Good and Fleabag.
What We're After:
Our method of filming takes advantage of the dynamism and quality of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Filmic Pro and Sandmarc Anamorphic Lenses to create a distinct look. . The lo-fi aesthetic highlights that compelling, interesting stories can be made with minimal resources. We use natural lighting, real locations, and local talent. We are currently in principal photography with the second block of filming to begin in late June with an anticipated wrap in mid July.
This funding will go towards post-production, aiding in hiring creatives for editing, sound design and sound mixing, and the talent fees for all of the incredible creatives that have come on board this massive project. At this stage only the principal actors have received a partial payment, and the most important thing to us in raising funds is to make sure each and every artist is paid for their time, expertise and work.
After the impact of the past few years in the world's longest lockdown, the arts were one of the most impacted industries in the country. We have created opportunities for people who have not been able to work in years, and now the aim of the game is to get these persistent people paid.
