OVERVIEW

What is 'INJURED'?  View the Sizzle hereTimely and relevant, my newest endeavor is, "INJURED'-- a feature-length, cinematic documentary film that reflects on physician distress in healthcare and how that distress correlates to strikingly high suicide rates among this specific profession. More accepted as "moral injury," physician distress continues to plague medical professionals and like an invisible disease that has been festering, it's now beginning to come to light, in part of the covid-19 pandemic.  This documentary attempts to capture the consequences of overworked medical professionals and how it affects patients as well as the individual.

Who am I? My name is Victoria H-L Castro and I am a graduating film/tv student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. I am the producer for this independent documentary.  Studying in the sciences before jumping into the arts, I find that storytelling is just as creative as it is technical. As an aspiring writer/producer based in New York, I find that many successful films embody a duality element of being both entertaining and proactive. I’m passionate developing and unearthing rich narratives to drive progressive storytelling on screen, particularly in the raw format of documentary.

What We Need & What You Get

'INJURED' is currently and mostly financed by myself. Our partners Dr. Wendy Dean and Dr. Simon Talbot at the Moral Injury of Healthcare group have kindly established their own crowdfunding campaign to help us fundraise for our documentary. Though this supports our shoot greatly, we have not been able to reach our goal and we need your help to do so.

  • We're looking to crowdfund $6,700 to this documentary to bring the film to the potential we so passionately think it can be. This cost includes the travel and accommodations that it would cost visiting these doctors and their families in the tri-state region. It is in our experience filming with past subjects that each subject shoot costs an average of $1800 factoring transportation, meals, accommodations and rental equipment per specific subject shoot. We have interviewed over 40+ doctors in the tristate region narrowed it down to candidates in New York, New Jersey, and Boston. The remaining  amount is intended to be a contingency and/or for post production.
  • We would love to and be willing to schedule one-on-one calls with donors, who are interested in learning more about our goals. We are able to answer any questions and share the unreleased subject interviews or behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage to those who donate. Additionally we would love to include you in our "Special Thanks" credit roll at the end of the film.
  • Should we not meet our goal, we intend to use what we have to meet as many subjects as possible as that is our priority.

In supporting the 'INJURED' production, we offer you our perks, which is listed to the side of the page. Please NOTE that if you do purchase a perk to please screenshot your receipt along with your name to be added to our "Special Thanks" list. Should you not, we are unable properly give your credit that you deserve. Visit FAQ for more.

The Impact

Urgency. Be on the forefront. This issue has been persistent, but has since been exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic. Media sources showed doctors constrained from delivering the best care to their patients either due to lack of proper PPE. Placing physicians in the national spotlight, it creates a unique and timely opportunity to direct public attention to this problem.

Purpose. Physician distress remains under-explored yet also remains too important conceal. People continue to use the term “burnout” to describe a physician’s distress, placing the blame on physicians individually rather than the larger system. As our culture keeps referring to our physicians as heroes or martyrs, it causes us to perceive their distress as a necessary sacrifice rather than a preventable tragedy. This film seeks to dispel the hero narrative by offering an intimate, humanizing portrayal of 3 doctors, which will be shown not as superheroes made invincible by their convictions or sense of altruism, but rather as mortal human beings with attainable breaking points.

Past Projects. I am passionately engaged projects with exceptional capacity for social change. Relevant topics and progressive messages are projects that I've been involved with in the past. I first began with developing two covid-19 PSAs focusing on mental health and domestic violence (respectively) during the pandemic. These two PSAs have been since acquired by nonprofit organizations. You may find these works here: https://hirakawa-lee.myportfolio.com/pitch-decks

Risks & Challenges

"Anything that can happen will happen." - Murphy's Law

We can never plan for things to go perfectly on set especially in documentary conditions. Though we have clear intentions of the nature and goals of the production, we acknowledge we too can find new threads and possibilities with the film's stories just from each subject's interview. In this way and common in documentaries, we find the film through our footage and our experiences. Though we aim to composite a feature, this may be contingent on the prosperity of our funding raising campaign (an alternative could be a short doc).

Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can't contribute, but that doesn't mean they can't help:

  • Know people in the medical field that resonate with physician distress and moral injury? Share this with them! Send us a message at injured.documentary@gmail.com if you know someone who may be interested in being featured in this documentary.
  • Share this with your family and friends! Generate some noise about physician distress and how this documentary can give a voice to those who've experienced it. Visit us our new website (coming soon)!

And that's all there is to it. For questions related to this production please contact: injured.documentary@gmail.com  or the producer (myself) at vac333@nyu.edu.
