Short Summary

Hey there, thanks for visiting my campaign page!

My name is Jerrica Hodgson I'm currently working as an actor/writer/producer in Toronto, Canada.

As an honours graduate of University of Toronto's English Dramatic Arts and Cinema Studies programs, I have studied multiple genres of literary, theatrical, and filmic works in depth through a critical lens. Through this education, I quickly discovered my love of the horror film genre as well as my love of telling stories about women. Two years ago I wrote my first short film Pink, which was directed by my husband, Patrick Hodgson, a very talented director who will be filming and editing my next film! Pink won an award of distinction at the Canada Shorts Film Festival. I've decided to write AND direct my next short film, titled 'Arabella', which is of course, a horror comedy about two very different women! Picture this: Two siblings visit their old cottage that they are planning to sell, when they encounter a witch that they see very differently. What I love about the horror genre is it’s highly symbolic nature. Often the stories told are actually metaphors. Arabella is a metaphorical film about the harsh societal judgement of the surface beauty of women and the difference between inner and outer beauty.

As a working artist, it's very difficult to find funding for projects (especially when it's your first time directing and you haven't proven yourself yet) so I'm reaching out to friends and family for help. As a donator, you are helping raise money toward my future career as a female filmmaker and teller of spooky (and funny) stories.  You are funding the making of a piece of art and entertainment. You will even appear in the credits! Once I get my start, who knows where this path will take me! I'd really appreciate your support as it will help not only me create my first piece of directorial filmic work, but also will help my future endeavours as a female filmmaker.

What We Need & What You Get

As you probably know, filmmaking is an expensive artistic medium. After budgeting for all expenses (and my husband working for free as Director of Photography, Editor, Colourist, and Sound Mixer), we realized we will need roughly $15,000 to complete this project over a three day shoot.

I found a quirky old cabin just outside Toronto that we can film in over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday), which is $1200 per day. The camera we are using creates very beautiful images (my husband has very high standards for image quality, as do I) which will be around $2000 for a weekend rental. We need a van full of gear for lights, etc. and need a trailer set up for washrooms for the crew (as the cabin is so authentic and old, it doesn't have a proper working toilet). Plus, hiring a kick-ass small crew of talented people (a 1st AC for $1500, Sound person for $1500, Special Effects Make up $400 per day plus prosthetic kit fee as well as hiring a 1st AD/PA). We will need catering on top of that for all meals for the crew all 3 days, as well as production insurance, accommodations for everyone over two nights, and payment for the actors.  With all these basic parts of the puzzle, the cost adds up quickly. Luckily, the last day of shooting, a bookstore in my neighbourhood is generously allowing us to film there for "pay what you can", which is so amazing and helpful! I'm so grateful!

So, what will you get if you help fund this film?

With a $10 donation =  thank you in credits

With a $100 donation =  thank you in credits and a digital copy of the film upon completion

With a $500 donation = thank you in credits plus invitation & free admission to Halloween screening night party at a cinema in Toronto upon film completion

With a $1000 donation = thank you in credits plus invitation & free admission to Halloween screening night party at a cinema in Toronto upon film completion with complimentary popcorn at the screening plus a digital copy of the film

If we don't reach our entire goal, we will be using what we do raise towards the project.

The Impact

Your help can make such a difference for me in my aspiring film director career and help me reach my goals much faster with a bit of financial help. Whatever you can donate, big or small, helps so much! I've successfully helped to produce two of my husband's films (Walter and Typical Love Story both of which got into many film festivals, even some Oscar qualifying festivals). I also helped organize the funding for the first film I wrote and starred in (Pink). I have experience with seeing projects through to successful completion.

Risks & Challenges

I'm going to be honest, being a working artist is really hard. It has it's ups and downs, but for me, it's worth it. There will definitely be challenges along the way, not just financial challenges, but working challenges on set and beyond. I tend to face challenges (and even failures) as lessons, and try to stay positive and keep going! Even if this campaign doesn't raise the full amount of money needed to fund this film, I will still work really hard until I save up enough money and make it eventually!

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't donate, I completely get it. Not all of us have extra cash laying around, and need every cent to survive. If you don't have any money to donate, that's okay! I'd appreciate you sharing this campaign with anyone who may want to donate.

From the bottom of my heart and soul, thank you so much for your help! I'm truly grateful.
