About the Film
Jonathan Silver: Infidel in the Studio, explores the life and art of sculptor Jonathan Silver. The film turns a lens on the work of this prolific artist, whose work helped redefine the boundaries of figurative sculpture and installation during the 1980’s. I was fortunate to interview Jonathan, along with art critic Michael Brenson, during his lifetime. The film features these interviews along with conversations with Jonathan's wife Barbara Silver, curator Donna Harkavy, and others who knew him. I was granted access to Jonathan's sculpture studio containing his artwork, photographs, and sketchbooks featuring studies for his large scale works. It's important that Jonathan’s legacy be made accessible to a new generation of artists and art historians, I believe this film provides that educational opportunity.

Who was Jonathan Silver?
Jonathan Silver was a Brooklyn born sculptor, who gained recognition in the 1980s for his emotionally charged operatic sculpture installations. Jonathan began as a scholar of art history at Columbia University before moving into making his own genre bending artworks. His work draws from the hellenistic tradition, as well as Rodin, Giacometti and Freudian psychoanalysis. He taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Montclair State College in New Jersey, and the New York Studio School. His work was written up in The New York Times, Art in America, and Art News, among others.

The Impact
In an era saturated with media, my films aim to draw attention to important but sometimes neglected corners of our society, environment, and history. Jonathan's unique perspective and tactile installation work needs to be commemorated and made accessible to the next generation. By contributing to this project you help ensure that this artist's story is not only remembered, but can provide inspiration and context for new work following in his tradition.
Our Challenge
It has never been easy funding an Indie documentary film! I have been working to fund my own films and artistic projects through grants and jobs for many years. I have raised private funding for this film up to the point of final post production. Now I turn to crowdsourcing for this final push, to get the film into the theater and pay my editors, sound mixer and composer. Any amount will help make this film a reality!
