Why "Just A Beer"...
My name is Glen Doyle. I've been involved in film
making since the early 1990's. As a screenwriter, I've been
produced four times but was never truly happy with the product created
from my written work. I've always wanted to direct something
I've written so my true vision could be realized. This 16 minute
short film is the most personal project I have ever undertaken. Personal
because it was written from my heart and addresses something that has
needed to be addressed since 1998. When I lost my father, I not only lost a parent,
but I lost my hero, my mentor, and my catalyst to achieve my goals. Being able
to address this loss and at the same time dedicate this film to his memory
will allow me the feeling of completion and hopefully a way to finally say
good bye with no regrets or unresolved emotions. To have people help me in
this quest to make this film will not only allows me the luxury of
expressing my ability and vision, but it will emotionally
and energetically allow me to close a sensitive door within the core of my
soul that has been tormented for so long. There are no words to properly
express my gratitude to those who help me move my life forward with the
completion of this project. My hope is that they will be able to see and
feel my gratitude by watching this film.
What We Need & What You Get
I've done as best I can to keep the budget as low as
possible and completing this entire film (cast, crew, shooting, and
post production) for $7,700 is only possible because everyone involved
(especially the director, DP, and lighting crew) are working for WAY below
what they are worth. Every penny of this budget is accounted for and I do
expect to cover any unforeseen expenses out of my own pocket.
If we raise more than the target $7,700, every
dollar will be responsibly, distributed to
all those involved in the production and hopefully will compensate them as closely as possible to a fee of which they
are well deserving. This film is dedicated to my Dad’s memory and I refuse to
personally receive any money from it. This is a labour of love. I just want to
create something from the heart,
however, everyone that works on this film truly needs to be paid what they’re worth.
I have so many people committed to this project that if
we don’t reach our projected goal, I’ll have to figure out a way to shoot this
film with whatever resources I have utilizing the funds we do receive. Covering
talent will be our main focus should we not reach our goal as our stars convey
the emotional clout of the script. I will find a way to make everything work. I
have reached the point of no return for this film. I’m committed now.
Now, WHAT YOU GET AS A CONTRIBUTOR…
We, as a team, have decided on a set of really exciting
perks for you as our contributor! They range from the $1 contribution to the
$1000 contribution and include items such as signed posters from the cast, signed
shooting scripts from cast and crew, digital downloads, DVD copies of the
completed film, screen credits and VIP tickets to the premier screening event.
We have contributions to fit all budgets and every dollar is very graciously
welcomed and appreciated. Just A Beer is a possibility because of contributors
such as you! Have a look at our perks and see which one is the perfect fit for you!
The Impact
In a world where technology helps us progressively shut
ourselves off from each other and overstimulates us, a humble film about a
father and son addressing regret during an emotional face to face conversation
within an ethereal backdrop may very well help us rediscover the power of our
words. Even though I have previous work that has been produced, none of the
films have had the emotional impact of Just A Beer and that is something I am very
proud of. In a world of science and technology and high budget CGI, it’s a nice
thing to be able to share simple yet powerful raw human emotion with all of
you.
Risks & Challenges
I’ve done my best to lock in shooting dates, locations
and of course the cast and crew. The only true risk at this time is if we fail
to raise our complete target number of $7,700. Should that happen, things may
have to be rescheduled or roles recast, but I am resolved to make this film no
matter what. We do have a contingency plan in place should one of our areas of
production run into problems. From talent to wardrobe/makeup, lighting,
location…all have a secondary plan in place to ensure that we stay on budget
and on schedule.
