Just Friends - an LGBTQ+ Short Film

A break-up is bad enough, but finding out that your relationship meant more to you than it did to your ex is a whole other level of hurt; it's a special kind of heart-shattering gut punch. We've all been there, we've gotten through it, but it doesn't mean it hurts any less in the moment.

Now your first lesbian heart-break? There's a reason why there's so many clichés about it...with big emotions come big heart-break.

Just Friends is an LGBTQ+ microshort that explores the complex dynamics of this exact situation through the eyes of young twenty-something Maggie as her solo night out at a local drag bar finds her third-wheeling with her ex-girlfriend and her ex's new partner. The film explores Maggie's trajectory from loss to acceptance in one night through snappy dialogue and experimental production design.

Backed by a BFI microshort grant, Just Friends is award-winning writer/director Rebs Fisher-Jackson's fourth film, her first exploring LGBTQ+ themes.

Why does Just Friends need your support?

Just Friends is backed by the BFI through a microshort funding grant, and we're extremely grateful for the support, but the grant doesn't cover the increasing costs of running a production. For years, there has been an ongoing battle to diversify the industry and make it more accessible for working-class creatives to get their start as it really shouldn't be a choice between paying your bills or your career, but there's still a long way to go.

In this time of the high cost of living and with the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild strikes affecting UK productions, BECTU's recent survey found that 3/4 of industry professionals are currently out of work - and it's even more difficult for those starting out in their career/working-class filmmakers without safety nets. Often early-career creatives make losses on their work: hair and make-up products, equipment costs, and travel and accommodation expenses can really start to mount up.

So, the Just Friends team want to run a high-quality level of production that ensures that not a single member of cast or crew have to pay to work and make a loss to tell our story.

The £5500 we're asking for as a top-up to the BFI grant has come from detailed calculations on what it would cost to rent camera/lighting equipment, location fees, catering and travel expenses, insurance, post-production, and fair wages above minimum wage for crew and cast with HODs in-line with each other.

The Impact of Just Friends.

The scope of the positive impact of Just Friends will be far-reaching for the cast and crew involved. As a BAFTA Connect member, Rebs is keen to continue working with other up-and-coming industry professionals to watch, and this is your opportunity to aid in the early career of the film crew and actors.

Although Just Friends explores a story that is relatable to most audiences, at its heart the story is an LGBTQ+ following a lesbian relationship. Therefore it's extremely important to the team that the cast and crew of Just Friends hire as many creatives that identify as LGBTQ+ to not only bring authenticity to the story being told but to use the opportunity to platform queer creatives who may not have an abundance of opportunities to work on stories that reflect their own community. With this in mind, it is also a goal of the team to hire creatives for traditionally underrepresented communities and backgrounds seen within the film industry; it's extremely important to make Just Friends into an accessible production.

Meet the Team

Co-Writer/Director: Rebs Fisher-Jackson (She/Her) |  IMDB | Website  | LinkedIn

A BAFTA Connect writer/director based in Cardiff, Rebs has just completed post-production on her first broadcast short film, due to air on BBC One in late 2023. Rebs is extremely passionate about diversifying the film and television industry - both on-screen and behind the lens; she strongly believes that filmmaking is a fantastic way to educate and represent experiences that transcend environmental and language barriers. She is a firm believer in the positive power of representation and wants to showcase positive and authentic stories featuring disabled/neurodivergent and lesbian characters to empower the next generation.

Rebs' first BFI-funded microshort, Best Student, is currently on the festival circuit and has obtained 22 official selections at international film festivals, so far cinching 12 awards including 'Young Experimental Filmmaker of the Year' at the 2022 Cinemagic International Film Festival.

Alongside directing, Rebs has worked as a script supervisor in film, television, and interactive games for over two years; her credits include 19 episodes of BBC's Casualty, the upcoming LGBTQ+ series Lost Boys and Fairies, The Flatshare, and The Wasp among others.

In February 2023, Rebs was part of the Iris Prize's 'Pink Portraits Revisited' campaign focusing on the next generation of LGBTQ+ creatives. You can read more about it at this link here. You can also watch Rebs' previous work via YouTube on her website linked above.

Production Designer/Producer: Lauren Taylor (She/Her) | IMDB | Portfolio | LinkedIn

Lauren Taylor is Graphic Designer and a short film Production Designer. Her recent credits include Willow (Lucasfilm), Industry (HBO/Bad Wolf), and The Power of Parker (BBC). Lauren began designing through university and discovered her passion for the TV & film industry while studying abroad in Los Angeles, CA. Since graduation, Lauren has designed several short films funded by both the BBC and BFI which have gone on to win international awards and screened in cinemas across the UK. Lauren is passionate about diversity and LGBTQ+ representation behind the lens, and as a BFI Academy alumni she attends festivals and events as an alumni representative.

Lauren and Rebs have worked together for three years and Just Friends will be their third film working together and they're looking to make it the absolute best it can be; they previously collaborated on 2022's Best Student.

Most recently, Lauren has been working in TV production in the art & graphics department creating everything from branding to posters and all the strange things in-between. You can often find her hunched over a cutting mat or battling it out with a home printer.

Other Ways You Can Help Just Friends!

With inflation and the cost of living crisis affecting so many, it would be remiss of us not to address that not everyone can financially support a film production, especially in times like these, but there are other ways to support us without cost if you believe in our story!
