My name is Tomasz from Poland. I finished my university. Got a good job in a recruitment company. But I felt something was missing... 2 years ago I quit. Came to Greece and finally to Nepal and India.
In India I joined the kanthari international course for social change makers from some of the most marginalized communities in the world (persons with disability, tribal peoples, sexworkers etc.). More at www.kanthari.org.
People like:
Ojok Simon from Uganda was 9 when a rebel soldier hit his head with a rifle which made him loose most of his sight. Once he found an empty pot, which to his surprise attracted honey making bees and filled his stomach. He learned beekeeping and now runs a bee keeping cooperative for 30 blind persons in the rural areas. His website:
http://hiveugandalimited.webs.com.
or
Monicah Kaguithia from Kenya, who was in her late pregnancy, when she escaped from female genital mutilation. Now she is an advocate in the Masai community who has initiated 43 girls into womanhood without circumcision so far. She has no website.
But the truth is that almost nobody knows about their exciting projects.
That is why I want to follow my newly discovered passion for filmmaking and make films about their projects. So that more people get inspired by them and want to
support them and people they are trying to help.
The films I made so far in India and Nepal you can find at www.kanthariplus.org.
End of March I am continuing my journey to visit East Africa, with a Dutch film activist, Marijn Poels (www.marijnpoels.com) and together we will create a full length documentary and 4 short films about kanthari graduates in Kenya and Uganda. This will promote their projects and also provide training for me so that in the future
I can do it independently and pass the knowledge on to the kanthari graduates which I visit.
My costs of travelling to Africa are covered by Braille Without Borders in Germany however there are other costs which need to be covered like:
- Marijn's flight ticket to Africa (800 Euro)
- Transportation (880 Euro)
- Visas (300 Euro)
- Equipment insurance (420 Euro)
Total: 2400 Euro.
If you decide to support the kanthari plus Africa film project financially the choice starts with signed photographs from the set, DVDs with the films, your personal or
organization name in the credits, special screening with me where I will tell you all about the backstage moments in the making of the films and the kanthari graduates :-). There is also a possibility to become a co-producer of the films for interested organizations.
However even if you are not in a position to support financially DO spread the news about the kanthari plus Africa film project or the projects of Ojok, Monicah and other
kanthari graduates in any way you can.
Let's bring out the amazing stories of kanthari graduates to the world so that they can get the support they deserve.
