About the Filmmakers
Penelope Kipps recently graduated with a BA in Filmmaking, and a feature film (Bailey.) under her belt. She was looking for her next big project when 'Kelp' was mailed to her. Excited for this new opportunity, she's hoping to elevate her career and hone in on her filmmaking style. You can see some of her work at www.sheepstudios.net
Noah Linick is the son of Lawrence Linick, writer of the script. He is a student studying Philosophy and English at Lewis & Clark College. He is hoping to become a writer, particularly within the genre of filmmaking. Thus, this project is paramount to his realising that dream. Noah's father, who is also a talented writer, wrote this script in his late twenties and put it down, never thinking it would come to fruition. Therefore the primary motivation in adopting this project was to carry on the legacy his father started with 'Kelp.'
About the Film
'Kelp' has a theme of a town that is blindly following a corrupt government, turning a blind eye to the recent murders that have been happening and focusing more on their ruined fruit salad and shrugging it off as the kelp causing the deaths. In the genre of comedy-mystery, it's a buoyant and lively script that takes the audience on a wild ride filled with kooky professors, evil mayors, riots, and shoot-outs.
There are a lot of creative opportunities available in this script, which are mostly being done by the director and cinematographer Penelope Kipps. She is creating props, figuring out how to do some old fashioned special effects, and many other exciting tasks. She hopes for the town of Bonita Bluffs to be filled with a kind of wonder and color that gives the audience a perspective into a very..... well, interesting world.
The Budget
Making a film can get costly. We are hoping to raise $5,000 to encompass every anticipated expense. A few examples of what the funds will go towards are:
- Props and costumes
- Lodging for cast and crew
- Food
- Any location costs
- Gas reimbursement
- Sound design / colorist
- Film festival fees
Any funds left over afterwards will go back to the main cast for the time they put into the film.
Where we are
So far, the cast has been locked in, we've found most of our locations, storyboards have been planned out, the equipment has been gathered, crew has been found, props are being located.... Once June hits, we are going to be ready to roll. It's been a long process but with Penelope's expertise producing and directing, there are only the usual nerves about shooting a film.
The cast has been found from various places around Portland, with people who auditioned best and are volunteering their time to Kelp. They are a strong set of actors who are motivated and ready for direction to make each character the strongest performance it can be.
A few last things need to be done, such as finding the budget to purchase some props that were unable to get donated, pay for room and board during the week, gas for driving to and from the locations, and hopefully give the actors something back for their time. There are a lot of components to this script in the way of props and scene setups, but with your contribution to the film Penelope and Noah can make it even more entertaining to watch.
Other Ways You Can Help
Please share this link! Even if you find yourself unable to contribute, it helps us out just by posting the link to your social media or telling your family/friends about our project! We are planning to be completely finished in September, which we will then start submitting to film festivals and getting the film seen. Word of mouth and sharing on social media is the best resource we have to get this film made and shown!
Thank you!
