Please help fund Kumeyaay language revitalization in Baja
I am a linguist documenting the Kumeyaay (or Kumiai) language spoken in Baja California. I teach at SDSU in American Indian Studies. You probably know me if you arec receiving this message, as I am sending it to people I know. I am raising funds to support a 2 day event this July in Juntas de Neji, a Kumiai community in Baja. This event is being held by the Meza sisters (Emilia, Aurora, Yolanda and Norma), who are grandmothers to about 35 children altogether in their community. They are planning a language immersion retreat for a weekend for all of their grandkids, where they will encourage them to just speak Kumeyaay and NO SPANISH for the weekend.
They simply need a little help with buying food for the event. I am trying to raise $500 for this purpose. This is the smallest amount Indiegogo will allow! This is enough to fund 3 or 4 such events, which are all greatly needed. All funds I raise will go into a specific account for this purpose. If I raise more than this amount I will save it for more such events. Any small amount you can contribute will go directly to these events (specifically, to me, and I will go directly to the grocery store in Tecate and deliver the goods to them.)

Immersion language events like this one are extremely important to Kumeyaay language revitalization. Although children may hear Kumeyaay language being spoken around them in their communities, unless adults insist that they also respond in the language, children will not learn to speak the language, and will not be able to pass it on to their children. All of us who care about the Kumeyaay language ned to help support Kumeyaay speakers wherever they are in these efforts, whenever we can, in whatever small way we can. Every penny counts! If you cannot contribute yourself right now, please tell someone else who you think might be able to help, by clicking on "share" on this website.
